Anyone know of any cool bike shops in Melbourne?

Does anyone know of any cool or good bike shops in Melbourne, the sort that carry stuff that's different to what you'll find in the usual chain stores? We're going there in a couple of weeks and I wouldn't mind looking at a couple while my wife is looking at bags or other stuff.

I know of Fyxamitosis in South Yarra but are there any others worth poking around in for a few minutes? Oh, and they need to be accessible either by tram, train or feet from the CBD.

There are not many places not doing the mainstream brands etc.

Try Northside Wheelers http://northsidewheelers.blogspot.com.au/
Have a look at Dan's Shifter Bikes in Prahan. He mostly builds wheels but has stacks of bike odds and ends on show.

Look at mymountain as well, they only do high end stuff, mostly MTB.

Be interesting to see who other people suggest.

Have a good time in Melbourne.

Well, I got to visit the places that people suggested earlier. Northside Wheelers is a tiny shop, mainly stocks Rapha gear but has an interesting collection of old racing mags and bits and pieces. It gives the impression of being a place for the owner to show off his collection while selling some gear to pay the bills.

Fyxomatosis and Shifter Bikes are great, but neither are bike shops in the conventional sense. Dan at Shifter is more than happy to give his advice on wheels (I'm going to get my Ultegra hubs built up with some H Plus Son TB14's as a birthday present.) Andy at Fyxo has some beautiful frames and bikes on display (including a team issue 7-11 Mercxk that he's never ridden). And he has a Llewellyn as well :)

Both guys are very happy to have a chat and know their stuff. I'm sure I'll be popping in to visit whenever I come to Melbourne

There's a cool shop on the corner of St Kilda Road and Carlisle St in Balaclava.

Last time I was there they had a great range of different kit and bikes (including so many different wiliers)

When you're done, head down to:

http://www.thelocal.com.au/MEL/

corner of Carlisle and Chapel Street.

20 beers on tap + too many to count available in bottles. :D
