ASO buys the Vuelta?

Bye Bye Bicycle said:
Maybe ASO gets the Vuelta finally back on track to become a professional GT at last. Last editions of the race were utter jokes.

Also for results, quality of TV pictures and financial situation of the race this is good news.

Monopolies are never good for sport or business, because then there is no checks or balances. Financially this might be good, but that is the only good I see coming from it. The Vuelta has been the most entertaining of the GT's for several years now. I like the Vuelta for the simple reason of it being so different that the TdF. I hope the ASO doesn't start screwing with things. Lately it's been the grand tour for climbers. Personally I hope things don't change to dramatically.

So now ASO outright owns the TdF and Vuelta. And were making moves to buy RCS' races. We'll one day get to the point of ASO controlling the entire professional (money-making) end of the sport. Goodbye UCI - don't mess with the ASO.

Wonder how long the northern races will hold out?
Wonder if the Vuelta is going to start being "fixed" like the TdF?
I guess IOC gets to play a role in any power struggle. Fun times.

well- like any other business entrepreneurs- ASO took advantage of the Spaniard financial situation to make a move & acquire an important WT race.

Sadly this is MONOPOLY at best - which isn't good for the sport at all-needless to say the stupid parcours designs they come up with every year... :(

Quite happy with this as someone else already mentioned the Vuelta was miles behind the Tour and Giro in terms of professionalism. We now might get some decent pictures and parcours.

Oh, finally better pictures... The pictures are fine. That's a pretty silly reason for being glad that ASO has bought the Vuelta. Also the Vuelta parcours are great. I'm glad that they are different from the other gt's. We don't need socialism here where everything is the same and equal. It is great having diversity in the gt's.

I'd prefer ASO ruling over UCI anytime. :p

I wouldn't. As corrupt as UCI has been, at least there is a form of regular elections with a chance of various countries being able to vote in a new president. Not so with a private entity like ASO.

Ugh. More monopole on races for the ASO.

Agreed. Really, really bad news in my eyes. This might, and I really stress might, have some positive effects on the Vuelta but I fear it's going to have worse effects on the sport as a whole. Not a fan of the ASO. At all.

Pretty much my thoughts on it.

Wouldn't surprise me too much if the ASO trying to buy the Giro rumours from a few weeks back turned out to be true. Hopefully ASO doesn't end up taking over every major race on the calender.

Well we agree to disagree, I'm all for some great uphill finishes (preferably MTF's) however I draw the line at anything above 6 or 7 in one grand Tour, no need for 15! A couple of decent downhill finishes would be nice too!

Ya, I think that is a totally reasonable statement(and to a point I agree.) I think if every year there is a enormous amount of mtf's that it can get silly....so yes there needs to be balance. My biggest quirk is with ASO buying them out and getting involved. I wish there was another way for things to change.

How many Spanish victories in the Vuelta over the last twenty years, and how many French victories in TDF:eek:
