I wouldn't even give him cycling breakthrough of the year because winning vuelta > 2nd in tour.

But obviously a non tdf performance won't get it, so it would be good if he wins though I don't know what the other contenders did.

But laureus is just a crap popularity among media fanboys contest that goes to the biggest name. there is a very strong correlation between how much a sports star earns and where they place.
Marianne Vos has never even been nominated for the women's award. That totally condemns the award as a joke.

Adam Scott and Justin Rose both won Golf Majors and are probably the Favourites.

Very Rarely does Cyclists get a mention in these awards.

Neither Scott or Rose where really breakthrough though, both have been around the top of golf, and winning one major is hardly setting the world alight, I would have thought Marc Márquez would be more likely to win (not that either motor bike racing or golf are proper sports).

Is the emphasis of the title on performance or breakthrough?
Quintana broke through before this season and I'm not sure his performance was the most impressive.

Well, Andy Murray won Breakthrough of the year last time, so take a guess;)

Murrays breakthrough was long before 2012 though, you could make a case for it being 2005 or 2008 when he reached US Open Final, but not 2012 when he had finished each season in the top 4 rankings since 2008.
