Simple question. And I think I know who is going to win this. I also think it was fairly easy to select the nine candidates, however I couldn't find a worthy number 10. Feel free to vote and comment if you think someone is missing from the poll.
It's hard to argue with if you go by results, i have to agree. I still voted for van Aert, just because he's been impressive for so long on different parcours and in different roles. Worldclass ITT'er, best "mountain" domestique (along with Dennis, lol), sprinter, puncheur, cobbled specialist, winning a monument and a classic after a career threatening injury, double silver at the worlds, 2 stages in the TDF and one in the Dauphiné...At first I'd thought Van Aert. But then then come to think of it, while being 2nd in both worlds + tdf stages + classic + monument is insane.
Roglic wins a monument, was active in the worlds as well, wins a GT and is 2nd in another. + a boat load of stage wins to boot. Roglic just edges it. Sorry Wout.
That would depend on other riders that year. And secondly, a 2 week period is not the same as consistent 3 weeks. But indeed, i would not easily say Armstrong was rider of the year. But that may be more about hating his guts than anything else. So, Armstrong's 3 week peak in his Tour only seasons never made him rider of the year?
Greg Van Avermaet vs Nibali is actually hilarious...Sagan is hilarious.
Greg vs Nibs I find debatable, I'd pick Nibs but I can live with it. Sagan is just a no for me.
However, Pogacar already won the Slovenian time trial. So I would not say it must be a one hit time trial which he won't repeat.Lol at people making a points about what if/should/could on other riders, but not Roglic..
I agree, he wouldn't won LBL if.. But he would've won TdF if not for a mutant Pog TT that literally nobody saw coming and probably he won't repeat it himself ever. He would've won Dauphine as well if not for a crash (now I now getting to the finish on your bike is the first step for winning the actual thing, but speaking of if's and nearly misses...). So yeah, Roglic has also his fair share of if's and things in different/normal circumstances but he backed up by results.
Roglic is clearly the best rider of the year and the only one coming close is WVA Results + performance. Domestique in the mountains - check. Top TT - check. Mass sprint - Check. One day races - check.
That's true, but didn't mean he won't win a TT (even though I doubt he will). And even in that TT he beat Roglic by 9 (?) seconds over 16 km. So him putting 2' or Roglic and destroying a ___/ TT like that is probably something he will never repeat. I mean...even Ganna didn't put a minute on the second guy in the WCTTHowever, Pogacar already won the Slovenian time trial. So I would not say it must be a one hit time trial which he won't repeat.
Both won a monument, then it's like 3 lesser classics vs 2 GT podiums and stage wins in GTs. I think it's debatable at the very least.Greg Van Avermaet vs Nibali is actually hilarious...
Only Froome was probably ahead of Greg that year, Nibali is at best 5th or 6th best rider that year.
GVA was undisputed king of the northern classics in 2017. He almost swept them all, won 4 out of 5, Sagan looked almost like a junior beside him. It was a dominance. Both won a monument, then it's like 3 lesser classics vs 2 GT podiums and stage wins in GTs. I think it's debatable at the very least.
Van Avermaet over Dumoulin is positively hilarious. Dumoulin even beat GvA on the cobbles in Binckbank Tour.
Did he Win any of those? NO. Subjective opinion of strongest but didn't get the job done..
He was strongest in Liège, MSR and on par in Flanders. What more do you want? Of course his level in the Tour was disappointing.
