Best riders without a win?

Who would make the Best Riders Without an Individual Pro Win team? Meaning a win at the PT or Pro Continental (TT2) level. Riders have to have ridden at least one full season at Pro Conti level or above; based on actual results as a pro, not potential. And classification jerseys like mountains and points don't count.

Maybe I'll do a poll after we get a bunch of suggestions and we can award someone the CN forum title of "Best Winless Rider" or something like that.

A few to start:

Tejay Van Garderen
Jurgen Van Den Broeck
Paolo Tiralongo

If you discount tour of Wallonie, then Thomas de Gendt has got to be up there. Won three jerseys, but has one sole stage win to his credit.

Serge Pauwells and Matty Hayman both have pretty empty palmares as well.

Has Nicholas Roche won anything yet? I know hes won nats but that cant count considering its so limited by nationality. Can it?

I was thinking of him, but he won a couple of stages in small races in 2008 (e.g Tour du Limousin).

Likewise, I was also thinking of Geraint Thomas, but he won the Fleche du Sud back in 2006.

Well if that counts then surely Amets 40km mountain pass victory must count too.

I'm not making the rules, but AT's win doesn't seem to appear on CQ Ranking.

correct. Seeing little Ametxa fall off in the Vuelta like he did was one of the most heartbreaking momebts from races i've seen in the last few years.

Are you thinking of Igor Anton on the Burgos to Pena Cabarga stage last year?

I don't think he'd have won the stage, I think Rodríguez would have caught him, and probably the Samu/Vally/Horner trio too. He was clearly the top man among the non-overall contenders in that race, brilliant in the climbs, in the all day break 3 days out of 5, first over nearly every climb. He had almost 3x as many mountain points as the 2nd-placed rider in the competition. Unfortunately, 'twas not to be.

The Flèche du Sud is a 2.2-rated UCI race. I think for the purposes of the exercise we should count UCI-categorised races but not national calendar events or minor things like the Amstel Curação Race,* and it's to that category that the Taiwan race belongs (although they hope to imitate the Japan Cup so will likely step up) - remember also it was meant to be much more of a race but had to be hastily re-done.

*though many may believe that though the UCI-ranking is a logical place to use as a cut-off, I have selected it rather arbitrarily in order to improve Txurruka's chances of being awarded this meaningless crown. Those people are, of course, completely correct.

So, I'm guessing that means only 1.1 and 2.1 races and above? How about the big national championships like in Italy and France etc? Those are usually counted and are sometimes even the highlight of a domestiques career.

Wallonie definitely counts.

I'd say if a rider's only win is in a national event we can discount it (unless it's Italy, Belgium or the like) but I don't know if we'll find a guy like that who qualifies for this list.

does the hillclimb in Taiwan count? If so, he's got a win. If not, then easily, by a landslide.

That was the event they did when they had to cancel the normal race due to typhoon, huh? I'd like to see the results before we make a call. I only see that Valjavec finished 2nd. Was it a full field?

If we didn't count that race, I'd say it's closer to a landslide in the other direction despite the fact that I prefer Amets as a rider. JVDB2 has been 5th and 14th in the Tour, 7th in the Giro, 4th in the Dauphiné, and has 40 top 10 finishes, more than twice that of Amets.

It's actually rather hard to find quality guys without a win. A couple more:

Martijn Maaskant
Kevin Seeldraeyers

It's the old BMC in the Tour thing. I remember JVDB's 14th in 2009 far more than his 5th in 2010. I'd rather be the guy everybody knows, always off the front, always exciting, than put together a string of anonymous placings. Is JVDB a better rider than Amets Txurruka? All things considered, yes. But do I give a damn? All things considered, no.

It's not my place to make the rules, but I propose that:

Wins have to be listed on CQ Ranking
Wins have to be while riding for a proper Pro team - at least Conti level (no pre-pro wins, but stag wins count)
National wins don't count.

(This was such an easy question before Szmyd won on Ventoux in 2009. We need one of those TdF preview magazines which list the number of wins)

I think ak-zaaf refers to the constant misspelling of Evans' name. I don't think he was trying to bait Aussie fanboys.

What does that have to do with the thread topic?

Well, Cadel Evens gets mentioned a lot. So he must be a good rider. But you never find him in the results, i.e. he never wins.

Heck, I don't know, ask ak-zaaf. Maybe he really doesn't know how to spell His Royal Evansness' name.
