Who's the best Overall South American rider?

2014 - 2016, project out next 3 years, GT & Single Day Majors.

Quintana seems best for GT with climbing, but Uran and Bentancur seem much better at one day racing.

atm Don Nairo, but i have some kind of blind faith in Seb. Henao, needs to be more consistent.

8. Atapuma
9. Rubiano
10. Bolivar

Dark horse: Chaves
Close.

1- Quintana

2- Uran
3- Betancur
4- Henao
5- Atapuma (The problem with him is that he is a Domestique atm.)
6, 7, 8, 9, 10 in no order: Arredondo, Acevedo, Anacona, Serpa, Bolivar,

We'll wait for Chaves to develop some more but he is looking to take the fith place in the future.

Serpa is better than Rubiano.

From Colombia, the big 4 with Quintana on top of the list (Uran, Betancur and Henao).
Then the triple A: Arredondo, Acevedo and Atapuma.
For the others, 2016 deadline is very close.

From Argentina: Eduardo Sepúlveda
From Brasil: Joao Gaspar
From Venezuela: Carlos Gálviz... Táchira field was strong but somehow that belongs to a different subforum.

Did you know it used to be the big five?

he was probably the most consistant u23 rider in colombia in years

Yeah, the fifth has failed to deliver year after year. He was great in Vuelta de la Juventud for 2-3 years and won an U-23 WC

But we all know the rest of it... 10 other Colombian riders have joined WT, at Pro-Conti level, other riders in his team get better results, so he's now around the 20th Colombian
I hope he can come back

What's the deal with Duarte, anyway?

Not as much talent as we thought? Lack of motivation? Poor training methods? Lazy?

plenty of talent, lack of motivation , lazy
he knows how to train, the great saldarriaga taught him
he simply does not care . probably he is making enough money from coldeportes.

more talent than any other colombian but increidbly lazy. basically eh doesn't even care about cycling and he rarely trains. he's really a lost cause. such ashame as he has more class than maybe any wt rider out there. and very few times he shows that class like I remember fleche brabanconne, california and final giro stage where even completly out of form he can show glimpses of his class

Obviously Quintana. I would place Uran 2nd at the moment with Betancur just a little behind him. Would probably consider Betancur best for one days or at the very least tied with Uran.

And it's still early in the season but Arredondo has already gotten some great results and is having a very good season. He's one of the fast rising South American riders I think.

Then there are a couple that I will need to see prove themselves in some different races. Anacona (needs to get some results), Chaves (show that he can come back from his almost career ending injury, Langkawi bodes well for this), and Henao (need to see if he can get results in GT's and see which direction he will be going in his career)

I knew he was talented, but more so than Quintana and fats Betancur? Maybe he'd do well at Sky where riders are a little more micro managed.

I think Chaves can become the 2nd best Colombian, after Quintana. He can become even better than Henao, Uran and Betancur i think. That guy is just so talented. To come back after such a horror injury and finish 4th in Langkawi is really good.

Beltran is also really talented, definitely a guy who can make the top 10 of best Colombians. And watch out for Juan Chamorro and Diego Ochoa, both really talented guys.

Anyway Rio, do you know if Chamorro can progress more this year? In 2012 he rode incredible during L'Avenir, but last year his 2nd part of the season was not that good (due to injuries and crashes of course).

Here is my opinion, based on WT results (my recollection, not statistically):

3 week Grand Tours:
1) Nairo: 2nd at TDF 2013, White jersey, Mountains jersey
2) Uran: 2nd at Giro 2013, White jersey Giro 2012, wore (but not won) white jersey in Giro 2011 & TDF), GT lead several times by team
3) Betancur: white jersey Giro 2013
4) Henao: Wore, but not won White jersey Giro 2012, GT lead at Vuelta by team

1-2 week stage races:
1) Nairo: by far, above the others, won Murcia, Basque, San Luis, etc...
2) Uran: podiums, but no wins
3) Betancur: probably going to at least podium Paris-Nice
4) Henao: podium, leader at Basque, but not won
5) Acevedo: Podiums & wins at multi-stage races in US
6) Arredondo: Podium & wins at multi-stage races in Asia

1 day classic type events (with legit Mountains):
1) Betancur: from last year
2) Henao: from last year
3) Uran: from previous years at Lombardia & Canadian races

1 day classic type events (rollers):
1) Uran, way ahead IMO than the others. Worlds, Olympics, etc..

Overall:
1) Nairo
2) Uran
3) Betancur
4) Henao

Too early to call on:
Acevedo, Arredondo, Atapuma, even Duarte & Chavez
