BGTPC - Big Grand Tour Prediction Competition 2011

This is the big Grand Tour Prediction Competition 2011.
You have to predict ALL the classifications, some EXTRA classifications and BONUS prizes, and last but not least, ALL the stages of all 3 GTs.

Giro d'Italia
Tour de France
Vuelta a España

No moaning - no excuses - no gifts

You can do and win single GTs, but there will also be a final GT-classification that includes results of all 3 GTs combined.

Prizes:
The winner of Giro d'Italia will win a good bottle of Italian water
The winner of Tour de France will win a good bottle of French water
The winner of Vuelta a España will win a good bottle of Spanish water

The winner of GT classification will win a good bottle of German water

The winners are allowed to call/label themself "BGTPC Giro/Tour/Vuelta Winner 2011" in signature, or what/wherever.......your choice. Even for stagewins if you want and need it.

Prediction System/Scoreboard:

GC

GT Joker (fixed!)
rider 1 (reserve joker1st, reserve joker2nd)

GT Joker:

You must choose one rider +(2 for reserve), called GT Joker(s), that will/can score for you on each stage.
The current GT Joker can score points on each stage - depending on his position in the Top15 of day's STAGE.
If your Joker wins a stage, he scores 15points - if he finishes 2nd, he will scores 14 points, and so on....that makes 1 point, if your GT Joker finishes on 15th.

1st - 15p
2nd - 14p
3th - 13p
.
.
15th - 1p

! You are NOT allowed to place your GT Joker in any other of your (*)-predictions !
! NOT in stage predictions, and also NOT in any general/bonus classifications !
! NOWHERE !
! Same goes for reserve jokers/riders !

The GT Joker will score combined with your scored points of stage prediction - that will be your daily results/points for stage then. He will be added to your stageprediction automaticly. He can also score in TTTs.
In case your GT Joker(s) has to abandon, then your reserve-GTjoker(s) will move up, in order of your choice. But please make the order clear.

Scoreboard (Giro d'Italia):

GC
1. 2. 3.
*** 150 100 50
** 120 80 40

** 15 10 7
* 9 6 4
+
GT Joker (0-15p)

ALL predicted riders, that finish in Top3 of a final classification will score points.
Same goes for stages and stagepredictions.
At the end of a GT, the points scored in all stages (stagerankings) and combined points scored in GC/bonus classifications (GC rankings), will be added and then result in your total points scored in that GT.
The predictor with most points will win the GT. Wow !
If there should be a tie, we'll have a look at the number of correctly predicted stagewinners. If then....ok, won't happen anyway, but then we just look futher.

Sending predictions/Announcements:
You send your predictions to me by PM. If it is necessary to send to someone else, I will announce that early enough.
If my PM box should be full or whatever may happen, then please post/let post your prediction here in this thread before deadline. Most important thing is, that it is placed somewhere before deadline with a timestamp.
Deadline for sending your predictions for ALL classifications, GT joker (+2reserve jokers) AND first stage (or prologue/TTT) is the START TIME of 1st stage/1st TT rider/1st TTT team. This will be announced here, or in the following post.

GIRO DEADLINE IS 07.05.2011 / 15:50 (Roma/Italian time UTC+1:00)
daily updated startlist
http://www.cyclingstartlists.com/2011/05May2011/02Giro2011.htm

Deadline for sending your predictions for daily stages is START TIME of the stage.
This will be announced and updated here, or in the following post.

DEADLINE FOR STAGE 2 IS 08.05.2011 / 11:10
DEADLINE FOR STAGE 3 IS 09.05.2011 / 12:55
DEADLINE FOR STAGE 4 IS 10.05.2011 / 12:00

You are free to send as much stages as you want in advance.
But changes then will only be allowed if a predicted rider abandoned, not just because someone changed his mind. May also depend on my mood or race's circumstances.

Please understand that, in the end, it is you who is responsible for sending your predictions + sending the correct predictions (following the rules (jokerrule!, full name for brothers!, correct young riders) + sending predictions in time + regularly sending your stagepredictions.
I will help, correct and remind as much as possible, I will manage this game fairplay and as good and fast as possible.

Limitations:
You are not allowed to enter this game during a GT and just predict stages.
Because we do all the stages and it is a lot of work anyway (hope so), I will limit this game to 30 contenders. If its 32 or 33 - I don't bother. We'll see.
In case we are just a small group minimum 10, we'll do it anyway.
If a contender won't do the next GT for whatever reason (I'll ask short before TdF/Vuelta), then those spots are avaiable again for other/new users.
If there are questions, misunderstandings or mistakes - then please just ask or remind me.
The prediction you send to me should look like that example down there, and it would be nice if you would remember to place your current GT Joker and reserves under your stagepredicion(s) in your PM, so that I don't have to add it every time, before I calculate and present daily stageresults/predictions.

Example for sending Giro Prediction (random names, no value):

GC (pink)
*** NAPOLITANO
** CAVENDISH,SABATINI
* HOOGERLAND, CIOLEK, GATTO

Points (red)
** GATTO
* GIORDANI, MALACARNE

* 2 teams
+
VISCONTI (reserve joker1st, reserve joker2nd)

for following stages:
** 1 rider
* 2 riders

Have fun and good luck ! :)
Save your spot by posting your participation, or sending your prediction.
Or just ask.

If you ask more detailed questions I will answer them.
I think the rules are quiet simple and it just looks complicated on first view.

The main difficulty is the choose the best possible GT Joker and his reserves. Its some calculation and playing some szenarios. :D

You just predict all the classifications. The rider you think will win Giro - you place him in first row, next to ***.
You give him most stars. The more stars - the more points you can earn.
Watch scoreboard.

Should look like this for maglia rosa
*** Contador
** Nibali, J Rodriguez
* Scarponi, Kreuziger, Menchov

same for other classifications sprint/mountain/young rider

mountain
** Contador
* Serpa, Sastre

Look, for this Giro edition I would perhaps pick a GC/mountain rider for joker, because there are not much Sprintstages. But be aware that the joker(s) can't be placed in the predictions with a star "*".
This joker has nothing to do with your GC predictions. He only scores for the stagerankings. Added to your stageprediction automaticly till he perhaps abandons.
Then your reserve-joker moves up, for all the following stages.

If your GT joker doesn't abandon - he will go through till end and possibly score till end of Giro for his results in all stages, if he should be in Top15 of stage.

A possible tactic also is, to choose a sprinter who might not finish the Giro.
You choose mountain/GC rider for backup.
Lets say Cav goes through till stage 12. He then scores till stage 12 - next to your usual stageprediciton.

possible prediction for sprintstage:

** Petacchi
* Farrar, Gatto
Cav (Arroyo 1st reserve, Rujano 2nd reserve)

If Petacchi wins, Cav 2nd, and Farrar 3th, then your score for that stage looks like this (see scoreboard):
** Petacchi 15p
* Farrar 4p, Gatto
Cav 14p (Arroyo 1st reserve, Rujano 2nd reserve)

15+14+4 points = 33 points

When Cav abandons then your reserve joker moves up, and can then score in that hard 3th week.
It's calculation thing, and always remember that you can't place your jokers anywhere else ! If you choose Contador as GT Joker, that might not be the best idea, because you can't name him then in your "*"GC predictions, and not for "*" stagewinnerpredictions.

Joker is all about calculation - and the rest is quiet simple.

I'm the Zomegan of prediction game organizers, you know...
But like I said, you can send predictions in advance. No problem.
Or do steps of 5 or whatever.

There is no guarantee that taking it day by day is an advantage.

Great job here Cobblestoned but I'm afraid I still don't understand :
Say for the GC are we supposed to pick 3 riders, or 6, or 9. I'm probably just stupid but I don't get the meaning of these stars ..

I applaud you completely, but for me, my little brain cant cope with it. Too many stars numbers and names, i cant even concentrate long enough to grasp the concept.

Top job though, looks like a lot of work went into it.

I nearly got reported in Germany for crossing the road when the red man was showing. It was midnight and their wasnt a car in sight. Far too organised for my liking

No problem.
You just have to follow structure of my example for sending the prediciton.
You should just choose the riders that make sense, since I just put in randon names.
The correct structure is the structure in my example.
It's quiet simple. In the upper line you can only name one rider.
Next line 2 riders
Next line 3 riders, if there are 3 lines
etc.

The upper line, where you can only put one rider, gives you the most points.
Next line, where you can name 2 riders, gives you less poins.
See scoreboard.
The scoreboard just shows the points to win in case of 1.,2. or 3. place.
IF you place, lets say, Menchov in the first line (***), and he gets 2nd in Giro final classement, then you will score 100 points (150 for win, 50 for 3th place-> scoreboard).

For GC (pink) 6 riders.

1 name next to (in the line of) ***
2 names next to **
3 next to *

For other jerseys (mountain/points/young) 3 riders:
1 next to **
2 next to *

stage(s) also 3 riders:
1 next to **
2 next to *

Fuga competition:
1 next to **
2 next to *

Cima Coppi
1 name *

Well, if you finally understand the system, its just simple. Really. :)

Dim, thank you. But it is really simple, when you finally get it.
Perhaps too simple.

Think easier and just watch my example prediction.
The only think that is complicated is the choice for your GT jokers.

From time to time I saw some users here predicting stages with help of the stars system. I thought it would be easy to understand and I hoped my example showed the simple predicting structure.

*** (I am really really sure this rider will win) 1 rider placement allowed
** (I am sure this rider will win) 2 riders allowed
* (I am not sure this rider will win, but he has some chances) 3 riders allowed

Its always the same logic - just the number of * (stars) varies in the different classifications.

Don't be afraid.

If you send me your prediction early enough, then I will help and have a look and point out possible errors.
Or just post a complete prediction (not your final accurate one) and we'll have a look. Might perhaps help others too.

No thanks, I have enough complicated German bureaucracy in real life already. :D

You can call it German bureaucracy mixed with Italian facilità. :D

Its really not as complicated as it looks and not as difficult as some people make it.

Is it a motivation when I now state, that some German girls\woman who were at the same time more cycling mainstream-fans, did teach some German cycling addicted forumites some lessons how to win this ?

This concept is not new, and there often won a girl, who sent all stages in advance and does hardly know anything else than the most famous cyclists.

They then just come back after 3 weeks to collect the flower bouquet and mock us "experts".

I think you can imagine how that feels. :D
And I wouldn't call this game difficult or too much Bürokratie.
I would just call it "new for you".

I can't commit to the stage by stage nature of the game. That's gonna put to much pressure on me. :)

No moaning - no excuses - no gifts :D

I'm the Zomegan of prediction game organizers, you know...
But like I said, you can send predictions in advance. No problem.
Or do steps of 5 or whatever.

There is no guarantee that taking it day by day is an advantage.

Great job here Cobblestoned but I'm afraid I still don't understand :
Say for the GC are we supposed to pick 3 riders, or 6, or 9. I'm probably just stupid but I don't get the meaning of these stars ..

Prediction System/Scoreboard:

GC
*** 1 rider
** 2 riders
* 3 riders

Scoreboard (Giro d'Italia):

GC
1. 2. 3.
*** 150 100 50
** 120 80 40
* 90 60 30

Example for sending Giro Prediction (random names, no value):

GC (pink)
*** NAPOLITANO
** CAVENDISH,SABATINI
* HOOGERLAND, CIOLEK, GATTO

Really. :)
