British Cycling: Road to Glory

I take it I'm not the only one on this forum who saw part one last week? For those that don't know Sky filmed a behind-the-scenes documentary around Team's GB and Sky detailing the build up to this years Tour De France and the Olympics.

The first part focused on Team Sky's training in Majorca, Dave Brailsford's schedule and never ending inbox, Paris-Nice, but mostly it was about Cavendish's arrival and the start of the Giro. It seemed to highlight how he was the unluckiest cyclist in Italy during the race.

Sky's lack of access to race footage did not help the documentary and it shows at certain points. Decent but I'm guessing the episodes around will provide the most drama. I'm probably missing some stuff out because it's been a few days since I watched it.

All in all decent show.

The voiceover was very basic (as you'd expect for a show on 'normal' television I guess - yknow marketed to wider audience than just hardcore fans)

Would've been nice to see some of the Spring but nevermind.

I like seeing footage of riders training in the winter/doing whatever after races etc.. That's why I liked Beyond The Peloton so much.

Brailsford's massive work schedule did seem crazy yeah.

One thing that struck me (probably belongs in a different part of the forum) is the focus on Brailsford's total focus on winning. Kinda contrasting with JV's 'winning isn't the priority' policy.

You guys should watch Belga sport. It's a documentary show about Flemish Belgian sports. They make some great docu's about Belgian cyclists like Eddy Merckx, Tom Simpson, Bernard Hinault, Lucien van Impe, Freddy Maertens, Johan Museeuw, Festina Tour, Lance Armstrong, Jan Ullrich, etc

They also do other sports for the record, but a lot of cycling.

It's in Dutch though. Although a lot of the docu's are in French with Dutch subtitles. Has a lot of footage from back then.

I watched the 1st part last week and it was quite good. A little 'dumbed down' to attract new cycling viewers but a decent watch. The only thing that suprised me was the amount of work Brailsford did each day, total dedication.

This thread is about British Cycling: Road to Glory though.

There was footage of Wiggins and Froome doing Altitude training there yes. Apparently they cycled the equivalent of climbing Mt Everest twice per week while there.

So 17,000 height meters per week? That's a lot. For how many weeks?

I was asking this question in a tongue in cheek manner though, as Tenerife gets a lot of flak from the clinic as being nontransparent and far away.

Sounds good-Do they have any shows archived on the net?

Running a Proteam and an Olympic program would require a lot of work, yes. They also have to avoid exposing too much to rival teams as well. It's amazing how scientific Sky is. I mean they monitor everything from power output to effect of the mood lighting on the team bus.

According to Brailsford the idea is to get the 15% advantage you get from doping through clean methods.

Do they show the swimming coach training bit? I wouldn't like to miss that for the life of me.

This belongs in the clinic where people can actually discuss it.

No reason to believe its any different from.hog and Armstrong claiming they got past a doping boost through high cadence.

I found the regular references to how marginal gains is more powerful than using drugs a bit odd. The newby fan who doesnt have a clue will probably lap that up, but in reality it is blatantly misleading.

Bit too much talk about all this inner chimp stuff too. Wiggo didnt seem too impressed with it either but he did admit the mental side of it is the hardest part for him.

I liked the coverage of Wiggins' sprint win in Romandie. It was probably after that win and recovering from the mechanical on Crans-Montana to win the TT and GC that the sky staff and riders really started to believe Wiggins had the mental strength to win the Tour.

Man is there some crap in this..

The inner chimp stuff
That whole webcam 'how happy are you?' thing with Hayman was pretty awkward
Just all the management speak etc

Also, I wonder are all team talks as vague as this?
"We've got a lot of learning this week..We've got to go through scenarios and see what we can learn out of it... just get out there and smash it"
Reminded me of Vaughters saying something like "We have to be really honest tomorrow.. My objective is that we perfect the process, that there is perfection in what we do, everyone agree?" before San Remo 2011

Part 3 was all about domestiques and focused on Mathew Hayman, Michael Barry and Luke Rowe in particular. The Races featured were Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Norway. Brailsford talked them up as did Bradley Wiggins. It was basically a nice spotlight on domestiques.
