normally i think this was fine ( but i dont know which protocol they applied to clear him )

bjerg said today that adam had hit the guardrail hard with his head first ( i didnt see that on the footage ) , and if he had said that to the doctor he should probably have been checked more thoroughly
I agree but if your GC is over it doesn't matter if you're checked in 1 minute or it takes 3. If you lose 15 minutes because you're soft pedaling to the finish that's pretty irrelevant

but the check is the same regardless. this is why concussion is really difficult to diagnose properly, because the actual symptoms can be delayed. he could have answered the questions correctly passed the checks, felt fine bar the road rash and bumps, roadside carried on perfectly ok, and then its later back in the bus or the hotel where you feel sick, dizzy and abit confused, it can be upto 48hrs before it really hits you hard enough for you or others to notice them.

unless you turn around and say anytime a rider hits their head their out, then therell be hardly anyone make it to Rome.

and Yates probably doesnt have any idea which bit of him hit what, when you crash like that you are a passenger, and the bump itself will wipe your short term memory of it.

so its fine to follow the protocol they have where they check roadside, allow the rider to continue if they pass the instant check, and if they dont then they probably need to be off to hospital, but the team doctor is then on the case monitoring them and knowing further checks will be needed later.

i dont expect many riders to hit a solid object like a guardrail head first from a crash at over 70 kmph in the rest of the race

I bet a chunk of them hit their head on tarmac on the stage 1 crashes and they werent going slowly in the sprint one either and tarmac is pretty solid stuff too.

there was a rule in world superbikes a few years back I remember where if you crashed and your crash helmet hit the ground, be that tarmac, air fence, bike, gravel trap whatever, if it made contact with something, you were instantly out of the session with an assumed concussion, and I think the protocol extended to barring you from racing again for a minimum of 24hrs. which the way they structure their race weekends meant you could miss the whole race weekend if you crashed in the first practice session.

now I think thats changed and they do a similar rider check trackside first and then later recheck at the medical centre, and their crash helmets then get sent away for some crash analysis

so Im guessing they didnt feel the automatic we'll treat you as though youre concussed, even if you might not be, wasnt working for them, or improving rider health or safety outcomes, which is really what its about at the end of the day.

He also had blood coming from behind his ear (I don’t mean the mud on his face).
