Cadel is on his way to Melbourne .
CADEL Evans will parade through central Melbourne next week to have his Tour de France heroics acclaimed on Australian territory.

The Age confirmed last night that Evans, who has scarcely left his European base in the tiny Swiss town of Stabio since his monumental victory, will fly to Melbourne with wife Chiara to receive public and state receptions as part of a three-day visit.

Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu is set to announce the star's imminent return today.

Advertisement: Story continues below Evans will either be driven - or ride a bike - through Melbourne to exhibit the yellow jersey he wore down the Champs-Elysees in Paris 10 days ago.

One option under consideration is that the 34-year-old would pedal along St Kilda Road, which would be closed for the event, before being presented and interviewed at Federation Square. A less romantic but possibly safer option is that Evans travels through Melbourne in a motorcade.

He would be better to do it on the weekend. It is hard for a lot of people to get to sucha parade.

It is rumoured that Evans will get the keys to the city.

For any one interested this is latest info.

Better take a big car tyre lever incase he gets stuck in the tram lines but if its Cadel he will just get a new bike and keep going .

UPDATE 3.45pm: CADEL Evans' mum says his short cycle down St Kilda Rd next week will be a career highlight that he will never forget.
The Tour de France champion will be cheered by thousands of Victorians at a welcome home celebration at Federation Square on Friday next week.

Evans is returning to Australia especially for the celebrations, which are expected to be staged at lunchtime following a short victory ride with other cyclists from the National Gallery of Victoria to Federation Square, weather permitting.

He will then take to the stage to address his fans.

Evans' mother, Helen Cocks, believes her son will be shocked at the number of fans who want to share the moment with him.

"I think he'll actually be blown away by just how happy everybody is for him,'' she said.

"He's been very well known in Europe for a long time and reasonably well known here by people who follow cycling, but I think people who aren't even interested in cycling have recognised this is quite an amazing sporting achievement.''

I bet the author of the article you're quoting originally had it worded like this:

"I think he'll actually be shocked by just how happy everybody is for him,'' she said.

I don't think he is. Only melbourne from what i've heard.

Martin, if people know he is going to be in the city on the weekend then the people will come. Would be tricky for people to get into the city or Fed Square from work unless you work in the city. Going to be hard for me to get to it as well.

By the sounds of things, he will be inducted into the National Sports Hall of Fame at the MCG.

There was talk about Victoria nominating him as Australian of the Year :)

Dunno if they will though - I think he has to actually live here.

Still - if Pat Rafter and Steve Waugh can get it, so can Cadel :p

Yes but those guys like Cadel aren't just sportsmen. All 3 of those guys do a lot of philanthropic work on the side. good to see them doing good on the side of their respective sports.

If you want cycling madness like you've never seen it then go down to Beach Rd. It isn't too far from the city.
