Cancellara dissed by own countrymen

http://www.swissinfo.ch/ger/sport/Ueberflieger_Ammann_symbolisiert_Sportjahr_2010.html?cid=29101340

So, this was rather troubling. After another great year where he won E3, Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, two Tour Stages (wearing the yellow jersey for a few days) and repeating for the umpteenth time as time trial champion of the world, The Canc is rewarded by his fellow Swiss as their 5th best male sportsperson of the year... Scandalous.

Now don't get me wrong, winner Simon Ammann had an excellent year, and doing the large hill-small hill double at the Olympics for the 2nd time is an amazing achievement, and finishing 1st in the overall Ski Jumping World Cup is mucho impressive as well, and one can argue for him being the best. But The Canc also finishes behind some nobody called Kilian Wenger (who practices a sport called schwingen), Roger Federer (who did very well of course, but not by his own standards) and Didier Cuche.... Come the f--- on!!! This is a slap in the face to all of cycling. (On a side note its also a bit of a diss for Carlo Janka, who won olympic gold AND was the first Swiss person in 15 years to win the Overall Skiing World Cup title).

Now I like the Swiss a lot (and I may be practically alone in that regard). I've lived in Switzerland for over half my life. I find this nothing short of disgraceful from the people who once were my neighbors. Shame on you Switzerland
[/RANT]

Cancellara won it in 2008 so they can give it to someone else.

I feel they had to give it to Simon Amman even though i dont like him. Just happens  to become unbeatable at the olympics twice now, even though he can do **** else in the other competitions.

Worrying thing is they gave it to Canc for winning Olympic tt. Worrying that they see Olympic tt as being worth more than a PR RVV double.

I suppose baring in mind its a winter olympic year and winter olympians only really get any limelight in those years its understandable that Cuche came ahead but CUche won it last year so he shouldnt be so hight this year.

Federer had his worse season in years so its just media hype that got him above Canc.

Canc should have finished higher but ultimately Amann was always going to win it and these things, only the winner gets it.

The biggest disgrace is a driver who wins because he has the best car getting German sports personality and 2nd in europe. what an absolute disgrace. 2nd in europe. All those athletes who ACTUALLY DID something must feel sick that a boring sport that is all about money and celebrity can get their guys into athlete of the year awards. Its like an actor winning politician of the year or something.

Britain has a Horse rider/jockey or whatever they call themselves as sportsman of the year.. so its not just Switzerland with dumb results..

And I reckon that was mainly down to a campaign to get him the win from horse race fans so you cant take it seriously particularly. I just see the funny side.

Unfortunately Sports Personality awards are basically popularity contests or campaigns for certain individuals. Sporting abilities or achievements rarely come into the equation in my opinion.

Hi, Moondance. Where would I get a link to see the list of Swiss sportsmen where Cancellara placed 5th? I found the English article to your German version, and they both either name only the winners (the English version) or the first three (German version).

Thanks. :)

(P.S. I would have also liked to see Cancellara win 1st place.)

...Okay, I found the list.

I am Swiss and couldn't understand it neither... but since the EPO generation (Rominger, Zülle, Dufaux, Richard, Camenzind, ...) has retired and Switzerland has no more GT candidates, unfortunately, public and media interest in cycling has been plummeting. I fully agree with the Hitch and find it sad, that nobody respects and realises the spectacular achievement of winning RVV und PR as double...

But what shall I say... maybe not a Swiss problem, rather a global problem that the hard work cyclists do is not appreciated:

Journalists vote athlete of the year 2010 - no cyclist makes it into the first 22!

Yea, how dare they vote for someone with 3,000+ race wins in his career plus winning the biggest race in UK horse racing.

Just because he's not built like an ironman triathlete doesn't mean you can **** on his achievements.

Its a bad idea to give a cyclist anything.

At any moment info could come out that requires you to take it back and give it to someone else.

Indeed, doping doesnt exist in other sports. In athletics they just eat a spaghetti the night before and then run a marathon in just over 2 hours

btw does anyone know who won the italian one?

I don't believe Italy has an official Sport's Personality of the Year. But the prestigious Italian news paper the "Gazzetta dello Sport" chose Jose Mourinho
as sports person of the Year 2010.

I read an article online Yesterday from the Gazzetta dello Sport. I can't find the Link pertaining to that particular article Today. Just from memory, in that article there was another poll, chosen by the Gazzetta dello Sport that listed the top Italian Sportsmen of 2010. Topping that poll was Andrea Bargnani, an Italian professional basketball player with the Toronto Raptors from the NBA. Carlo Ancelotti the current Chelsea manager was in second spot. Ivan Basso the winner of the Giro was listed around 6th. And Vincenzo Nibali winner of the Vuelta a España around 8th.

grazie. Though the results dont please me. Narcisinho. Sports personality. Seems like Gazzetta isnt much better than the infamous British tabloids. Jeeez.
