No, it will be Alastair Cook or Jonathan Trott.

cook scored 766 runs in the Ashes which they won for the first time in Australia since 1986-87.

Bloody cricket!!

A minority sport in world terms and played by barely a dozen nations in total at the top level. FFS!

unfortunately (for Cav), it's the first time in a long time that they have become number 1 (since '55).
I've heard many claims for Cav on the BBC website but I don't see it happening

You are excatly right it will go to Alastair Cook, he's had a stand out year and people will remember his excellent Ashes. He will win it above Trott as he got man of the series against the Aussies and strangely Handsome and my girlfriend alone will give Cook enough votes to.win

Cricket is the second largest sport in the world based on player size (you can thank India for that) you are correct about how there are barley any nations that play it at a top level. However for the British its still a bigger sport :( and globally in player numbers to...

The Tour de France is the biggest (i.e. most watched) yearly sports event in the world though. And Cav did quite well there. But the same goes for previous years, of course.

I love test cricket (not the ****ty 2020) I love cycling as well, I think both have similarities, for long parts they attritional (not dull), but when they spring to life both can be exhilarating (more so than any other sport).

I think the more important point is how many people view it in the UK as they will be the people voting. Cav could well top 3 but cycling just isn't in the British public conscience as much as Cricket.

This is true, however i doubt would be the case in England where the award is from, i would say many more people watch the Ashes there. Im not saying i dont want/think Cav should get the award im just saying i dont think he will.

Darren Clarke (Open golf winner) will probably beat Cav as well.

- First Brit to win it in 12 years
- His wife died a few years back and there was a lot of sympathy for him at the time, so his win had a real 'feel good' factor to it.
- He's not afraid to be himself in the media, unashamedly giving drunken interviews after he won (and I think we quite like that)

I think it will go Cook-Clarke-Cav.

If we somehow fluke the Rugby World Cup then all bets are off though!

Well in certainly hoping Cook wins it as I had a wee tickle on him at 40/1 at the begnning of the year.

You can never write off the England rugby team though, last time they lost 36-0 to the saffers only to make it to the final.
Clarke is also one of the favourites (considering his Ryder cup post his wife's death) as well and McIlroy is a big crowd favourite, so he's also got a chance. Still, I think it will be Cook.

Dont forget the requisit number of footballists, Boxers and jockeys they have to have in the mix. SPOTY used to be an fairly honest reflection of a sporting year but not any more, it depends on which sport manages to lobby it's fans enough to push their candidate forward.

Olympicyears are different and I think those years should reward the outstanding Olympians like they did with Hoy. I honestly think Cav will struggle to top three, I'll still be voting for him but It'll be a struggle.

I guess it's the same in every country except Belgium. Here in Holland, if a speed skater so much as farts in the direction of a gold medal, he's the sports personality of the year.

(although of course we don't really have any cyclists who deserve that title, except Vos)

Football gets a lot of unnecessary hype in such awards. England's footballers and Indian cricketers are the worst breed of sportsmen around.

If you fart in the direction of a medal, won't it turn into a coal medal.
Gesink if ever fit will be one sportsmen of the year.

2009 - Jenson Button wins the F1 world championship. who gets the BBC SPOTY? Ryan Giggs.

Never assume that the award is cut and dried

Lobbying can make a difference

Clearly professional cycling is very very far down the pecking order of the British public's sporting consciousness, but (as some one else observed) SPOTY is also very susceptible to lobbying .... and lobbying power does not necessarily equal general popularity.

In SPOTY lobbying well-organised groups often outweigh larger but more disparate groups.

In Britain, cycling's biggest advantage is that it has a significant number of casual practitioners (lots more than second-string sports like Rugby and Cricket), a well-organised core of clubs and is quite trendy among media opinion-formers.

A Cav win is unlikely, but possible.

P.S. The BBC and SPOTY are British ... not English (e.g. not much cricket in Scotland, Wales and Ireland).

That's one of the lousiest awards ever, he got it for half a good season. Even if Button had got it it would have been a lousy award. he drove a car much faster than the rest of the field. But the form Cook has shown in a mainstream English sport and his superhuman efforts against England's main rivals Australia puts him way ahead of any of the competition. He also scored a double hundred each against Sri Lanka and India and totalled 1500 runs in the last 10 months.

Given we lost the Ashes, got beaten by Ireland in the Rugby and will struggle (read won't) to win the World Cup and won no golf majors, and its not an Olympic year, Cadel may get one back for cycling in Australia if Cav can't win in Britain.

It also has an average of one billion dollars betted per test match! Im a massive cycling nut but I also love me cricket. Hammering the Aussies was one of Englands best sporting acheivements for a long time.

Cav will do alright in the vote for SPOTY, think itll be close. It doesnt even have anything to do with acheievement, Jenson Button winning the Formula One was pretty outstanding considering the tea situation and he lost out to Ryan Gigss, who was a bit part player for Man U.

If he doesn't win then it is a total joke, I don't think he has any real competition unlike Cavendish where there are other very good candidates.

True but when it comes to cricket its GB by another name. All the good Irish, Welsh and Scots (I think there is one scot who almost played) played for England. Also approximately 85% of the UK population is English so if it was to go by country England would still have a healthy advantage.
