Cipo being Cipo

Great article with Cipo's views on the lack of machismo in today's peloton: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/cipollini-decries-modern-cyclings-lack-of-machismo

In the article he laments the friendship between Andy and Alberto and that instead of pinching each other on the cheek after the Tourmalet, they shold have been raging at each other. As usual, he's over the top, but I think he's got some valid points. Nothing makes a sport more interesting than when the combatants truly hate each other....or at least dislike each other. All this kiss-kiss in the pro peloton does get a little nauseating after a while.

The money quote from Cipo: "I read an interview with Umberto Veronesi, a scientist, a reputed oncologist and Minister for Health,” Cipollini continued. “In five hundred years or more, human beings might have both sets of genitalia, male and female. I don’t want this evolution to have started already in cycling…”

Instead of criticising Andy and Alberto for not hating each other enough, he really should blame the rest of the podium contenders for being pussies, and not taking advantage of the situation when most of the peloton crashed during stage 2 of the Tour.

Just imagine how epic this summers Tour De France would have been if the likes of Menchov, Andy and Contador already were 5-6 minutes behind after stage 2.

cipo just made my day.totally aggree with him regarding the pusssies.
bring back the fuccin '90s!

“Contador has the anonymous face of a surveyor or an accountant.”

=)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

epic.

Totally right. I argued this during the ANdy Schleck chain incident saying i hope it would stir things up.

Controversy creates cash

Boxing fights sell on the premise that fighters hate eachothers guts, and afterwards it turns out they are good friends. Promotions constantly try to get powerfull effective words into the fighters mouths, because they know every word is an extra few people buying the ppv.

Schleck vs Contador: Unforgiven,
sells better than
Schleck vs Contador: Why cant we be friends.

Multiply that 6 minute figure by 2 and you get the 2010 Giro d italia. The best climbers being FORCED to attack and put time in, on every single mountain stage.

One of the 10 best grand tours ever.

Nope, he's just being typically Tuscan in the rural, "unevolved" sense.

You see the beauty of Super Mario's statements, is that it make the rest of us in the "civilized world" realize how much liberty we have lost with the advent of politically correct.

At times this was a necessary thing, at others it has meant that we have lost all sense of the ridiculous. In the end Cipo's sarcastic remark regarding Veronese's hypothises, is decidedly more appealing than its possible future reality. No? :D

Menchov (and Gesink) were at the front when Cancellara blocked the race. The DS said after the tour he gave instruction to race as hell, but somehow they didn't...

I wouldn't have a problem with what he says if it wasn't that he mostly did nothing during a race besides a little sprint(there are some exceptions though. And I'm talking about racing not about all the controversies he started). You were never a macho Cipo.

Cippo finally said what I was thinking from that girly moment when AC pinched/patted Schleck's cheek at the Tour after stage whatever it was. Bravo! In the day of the Lion King, he did it in civilized manner... like he didn't break out the brass knuckles at the finish line. But he had that mean streak that any athlete needs in competition.

Contador was making clear Schleck didn't win because he was the strongest, but that Contador gave it to him as a gift.

Isn't that the cocky attitude Cipo wants?

I think we all know why these competitors are so tight: they've been backed into a corner by anti-doping regulations, and now it's "them against the world".

I don't think you'll ever see sprinters with the kind of camaraderie displayed by the climbers and GT specialists.

Garmin should hire Cipo to thrash the meek and nervous suckitude out of Tommy D.

First time I have ever literally laughed out loud by myself while reading these forums.

I couldn't agree more. If JV were really capable of being the "best coach in the world" (as he himself has claimed on this website), then he would have found a way to "thrash the meek and nervous suckitude" out of Tom Danielson a long, long time ago. JV should also have the balls to fire a guy he clearly likes on a personal level so as to make room for a real badass helper like Jeremy Hunt.

I am also hoping the Garmin-Cervelo alliance might result in Thor Hushovd thrashing the aw-shucks goofiness from Tyler Farrar's face. Farrar is pretty ripped and fast, but he needs to stop being a toothy, oversized, ginger-haired Michael Boogerd and start head-butting Mark Cavendish in the face if he really wants to be taken seriously.

It already has, seeing as I've always thought of Cipo as both a c**t and a thundering great c**k.*

I think you need to see this video from 1994.

Cipollini did not baulk when Baffi (who was his teammate) forced him in to the barriers.
Not only that but it never fazed him on his return - the guy has cojunes.

Damn right. In the 80's, no one would have waited. Remember the railroad crossings that used to mess-up breaks and chases? Now everyone sits up and waits.

Like I said, there are exceptions(like when he threw his water bottles at a race director), but mostly he seemed girlish to me to be honest. Well girlish isn't the correct word as he's a lot more bulky then I am, but still :p

nevertheless a won a monument (M-SR) passing 4th on the poggio, a couple of ghent ( going alone out of the bunch to catch the escapee), world champion in zolder, with all the team ( petacchi included) devoted to him.
charisma 100%
he helped gotti winning the giro in the saeco jersey, taking his turns in font of the bunch.

he has always been "" capo" , one of the true boss of the peloton, for years.
he gave his carbo wheel to pantani before the ascent of terminillo, when marco was trying to come back, even if they were in different teams..
he was among the few that knowing the sad story of marco tried to help the man, not the rider

he has 100% charisma.
if he is not a macho, i do not know where you can find one in cycling

+1 That's how I saw it too. Contador was in his own subtle way letting Andy Schleck know that you can celebrate all you want but you know and I know that I didn't contest the stage win. I remember thinking at the time that AS's celebration was bit over the top considering the circumstances.

I agree with Cipo on the majority of his comments-but I don't think is the "macho" behavior what is lacking nowadays-rather than a lack of strong characters in the current peloton--since isn't clear yet who has the strength in command, when the two best rivals in Pro cycling prefer to hug & kiss instead of exercising their influence-on and off the bike-...
I guess I'm still waiting for the second Hinault to arise..
