Cleaning Helmet Straps

When I bought my helmet, the straps were off-white/light gray(can't remember). After many rides, bad weather and much sweat, they have turned a dirty dark colour. What's the best method for making them look decent again?

Take it into the shower with you and give it a good scrub. It doesn't hurt it. You can also rub some waterless handcleanser into the straps between washes to get rid of any nasties.

run the pads through the wash and I use dish soap in the sink to clean the shell and straps.

Soap (pretty much any kind) and water. Just don't go out and buy some over priced bottle labeled as helmet strap cleaner

Get those salt deposits off of them, just soap up hands and rub on the straps till the "Fred" markers are gone. Don't use a harsh brush as you'll fray the straps and they'll become fuzzy. Don't forget to clean the rest of the helmet, bug guts on the cover as well.

If Im busy my gal does em for me.

Good tip on the soft brush.

personally i rinse my helmet after every ride. just basic hygiene for me.

Same. Just rinse the straps and pads after every ride. Helmets can smell pretty badly in a hurry.

Don't

Maybe you shouldn't clean those straps. In some cultures, I have heard, the dirty helmet strap is a sign of wisdom and grace. Wear that dirty-strapped helmet with pride. My advice, concentrate on keeping the chamois and jersey clean...the helmet will be out of style before you know it.

I have seen some in the Fred culture do that, which other ones?

NAMELESS: It’s a nomadic culture that comes to mind. Rarely seen, it’s reported that they drift back and forth across the Sacramento Valley at night…abajo la luna llena…siempre. Riding, like whispers, wearing flowing black capes and riding those old steel Peugeots in a V formation. Gliding silently for hours slicing through the evening breeze, they’re known to gather along the river…around open fires, eating nothing more than what they can run-over with a 700x23 and roast…with marshmallows. After a silent meal, it is said that they wait for the word…word from the wise one…he whose helmet straps are dirtiest…. So the story goes.

It is sadly pathetic when someone is so desperate for attention they resort to posting pictures of their girlfriend to a thread about cleaning helmet straps.

this is why I read CN forum.

Last night after a ride at 90F in the shade at 5pm I walked straight into the shower with the entire kit on sans shoes. thanks to you I have a new approach to helmet hygiene

all these years and I never thought of that.

Gloves and helmet cleaning have always taken a back seat in my routine for reasons I can't quite rationalize

Oh and you should smell my bar tape!
