Colombian National Championship 7-8 Feb

This used to be an unknown race. Or at least there was a lack of interest by the most important Colombian riders. Now we have the interest of some of the best riders of the World.

Some of the participants include: Quintana (Both brothers), Uran, Betancur, Duarte, Lopez, Chaves, Anacona, Rubiano, Cayetano Sarmiento.

It looks to be very interesting. Follow it here:

Colombia has gone from 2 WT riders (Soler, Uran) in 5 years to this!
Now, there was always interest in participating in the nationals, the problem is that the Colombian cycling federation always scheduled it along with the other sport's national championships. It was a scheduling conflict with el Giro and Tour of California. Many riders have been asking for it to be re-scheduled. They re-scheduled the elite men and u23 men riders (TT & road). The other events are still on the same schedule.

They also re-scheduled the Vuelta a Colombia, so hopefully it will get some international flavor too

Well, Oscar Sevilla is pretty international :D

Finally we will have a proper National Championships in Colombia. The route isn't very demanding but I guess all the big names will try to win it so there will be havoc from the beginning (especially that the races starts with the hardest climb of the day).

Last year, the big boys were Team Colombia with Rubiano and Winner Anacona.
Winner & Rubiano (along with Team Colombia) went REALLY hard at the beginning, snapping the peloton. The goal was to have an european rider have the jersey. Rubiano won, Winner came second. Following the same strategy, same should happen. Should be a crazy start!

I don't think the route has be hard (climb wise) on that altitude.

incredible nc this year!! the course is perfect because all riders especially local riders are not in form. they have 0 racing days as the colombian season doesn't start until late february

The route is kind of crappy as the loop is flattish and long (46Km)... They did however, improved a bit, because at the beginning they proposed to race it the other way around (making the climb a false flat 25 Km from finish line) in a slightly shorter lap.
The had another option by cutting from the finish line to bottom of the climb, making the loop "only" 33Km and adding 2 small climbs (1K each).

The good thing is that teams have 6 riders which, unless alliances, will lead to chaotic racing.

One thing that is not too good is that the ITT is the day before, so some of the riders will be tired.

Regarding the altitude, 2000m is just average for Colombian standards (well, except the coasts, but they are not into cycling).

While it's a low season, usually Colombian teams attend races in Costa Rica (December, 4-72 went), Tachira (January... attended by an amateur team from Santander dpt.), recently San Luis (Team Colombia and national team), Independencia (February in RD) and some minor races in the Caribbean islands.

As for the local calendar, there has been a couple of one-day races in Manizales and in Boyac?, nothing major.

In Colorado either?
I have seen people there going as turttles in a false flat.

Colorado gives us 20km climbs at 3000m at 4-5% and they finish with groups of 30 riders and a huge borefest.

Everyone predicted carnage because of the height, but in the end they all indeed suffer hard at the altitude, but they all do.

So yes they suffer, but it doesn't cause gaps.

The circuit has a second climb just after the descent, 1 km at more than 6 %.

I don't think anyone is going to get dropped there, except maybe in the last lap.
Different story would be this route: http://goo.gl/maps/CPp9p given the irregular climbs

Again 2000m of altitude is not challenging for people who live and train even higher... when the plateau where BogotA and most of the population of Cundinamarca and BoyacA is 2600-2800m, when main cities in Nari?o, Caldas are at similar altitude.... Even when other big cities are over 1000m: Medell?n (1500), Cali (1000), Bucaramanga (1000), Pereira (1400).

colorado sucks because the climbs are 4% not because the altitude isn't hard. in this race the climbs are much steeper
