About a week ago we got to know the route for the Tour in 2016, but I want to know the exact route, including details about what cities the cyclists will pass through during the stages. When are we expected to get these details? I'm particularily interested in stage 11, Carcassone-Montpellier.

Usually the exact route is made public a month or so before the start

More than that, the exact route on "non decisive stages" is often not fully known until the spring when last decisions are made "hm.. a series of roundabouts doesn't look super safe here", etc..

So whereas the route of ITTs and moutain stages are well known, on flatter stages the detail isn't fully set in stone yet, so ASO waits for confirmation before releasing it. You can usually get a very good idea of the route from their video though, if you match it almost frame by frame with a good road map.

I'm speculating now but I believe the ASO knows at least where the intermediate sprints are located already at this early time in "non decisive stages" such as stage 11.

Considering the length of the stage is 164 kilometres, I'd say the route'll go southwards over Narbonne and coastline.

Based on the 3D-animation on the Tour's website it looks more like the route will go north of Beziers maybe through Herepian and Bedarieux and not coastline.

You're right. They might pass northwards through Mazamet, pay tribute to Jalabert(s) and visit some scenic neighbouring areas on the way to Montpellier.
