Critérium du Dauphiné 2012 stage 5. Saint-Trivier-sur-Moignans - Rumilly (186 km)

OK guys, nobody has started this so far so I will.

Criterium Dauphine finally gets into some high mountains on this stage, tackling the Grand Colombier. The only problem is, it's about 75 kilometers from the finish.

Will someone try to attack to drop Bradley Wiggins and UK postal? Will a breakaway succeed?

I have hope for the Tour's Colombiere stage. THIS, however, is despicable.
40-50 man field sprint. Barredo or Chavanel to win. Boasson Hagen might even still be there.

Andy to wait for the Joux Plane for his magnificent attack! :p

Are those cows dropping Andy on the climb. :)

I don't see any contenders attacking, it's too far out. Breakaway is possible but has to be the right guys, or they'll get chased down. Sprinter teams will try and get over the top. I would send a break after the Grand Columbier and push the pace on the Cat 3 to drop sprinters if I were an opportunistic team looking for a stage win.

Could see some TDF contenders who don't care about Dauphine that much attacking just to see where they're at (Nibbles, Menchov, Andy). Could animate the stage somewhat

I didn't think the ASO would be capable of using the Grand Colombier worse than their stage in the Tour.

I was wrong.

Breakaway day

This stage has been designed with the sole aim of making the Tour's use of the Grand Colombier look less ridiculous.

I've been hoping that climb would be used in a bigger race than the Tour de l'Ain for a long time. Now, having seen what the Dauphiné and Tour are doing with it, I'd rather they have left it. At least if they're going to waste climbs 70km from the finish to be "raced" like the Pyrenées in the 2009 Tour, they could have made the climbs less interesting ones like Petit-Saint-Bernard or something.

Wonder if Grand Colombier will even make it to the televised time slot, probably not. It the Colombier stage of Tour de L'Ain being televised this year, any idea?

Because it's done in the Tour and the Dauphine. Well officially because it's done in the Tour. Probably because Culoz/Ain have to pay for the "privilege" of having the Tour waste Grand Colombier.

Thanks.

That's just ***. Is it really worth it financially to have it uselessly far from the finish at the tour vs have it at TD L'ain? I guess it has to, otherwise they wouldn't have done it. Still sad though

It will be breakaway stage, a couple of the sprinter teams might try to take up the chase but the big teams (Sky, BMC, OPQS, etc.) will take the day off. Might be a good chance for Voeckler to get a win.

I so hope so.

I initially desired a/some (TdF) GC contenders (not Dauphine) attacking and then keep on going...but why tip your hand...might as well save it for the Tour.:D (Yes truly wishful thinking)

At the very least I hope we have a pretty big breakaway with strong riders. Maybe Voeckler lost time in the tt so he could get in the break on the next stage. Maybe some gc contender that lost time already will go for it to bridge to the break on the columbier. But if it all comes back together then I would bet on or julien simon or maybe even gilbert.
