After posting some pictures from Paris Roubaix this year, I thought about starting a cycling photography thread.

Pictures can be anything cycling related, but they must be taken by you and nobody else!

**edit** This thread is for discussion as well. So don't feel you can't post if you don't have any snaps!!

Well I'll start with some pics I took at the 2007 Tour, finally uploaded them due to a sick day from work!

Contador and Rasmussen tete de la course 2.5km from the summit of Plateau de Beille.

This was my first experience of taking photos at a bike race and they came up so fast I got caught out a little, still I think this pic has a certain charm!! (plus I sheltered some Basque lads from the wind with some PMU hands while they skinned up a joint, when they offered it to me I didn't say no and was a little stoned by the time the race came through!!

No explanation required.

Chasing group led by Sastre.

Just a few for starters, if there is any interest in this thread I'll put some more up. If not then I'll get my coat!!

Like I said any cycling related photos you've taken can go in here not only pro racing.

Great idea. Here are some photos from the 2005 TdF, first on top of Col Du Galibier and then from the stage start the following day in Briancon.

I was lucky enough to be in Europe for the start of the Spring Classics in 2010.

Boonen and Cancellara on the slopes of the Muur just before Cancellara puts in his decisive effort to win the Ronde van Vlaandaren:

Vino in a world of pain, Plateau de Beille. Here he is losing 30 minutes after winning the TT the previous day. The next day he won again at Loudenville. Look at those eyes!!

This is about 6 km from the finish at Col d'Aubisque. These Kiwis putting up the banner are part of a group I got chatting to. Small world as the one on the left I bumped into at the world track championships at Manchester in 2009!!

Got some racing pics from Aubisque to add later...

Okay. You guys are using cameras which are way better than mine. I usually just gets blurry stuff (or nothing)

Hi RedheadDane - It's not always about the camera.

If you have a DSLR, make sure you use your camera in shutter priority mode with a high shutter speed (>1/250 sec). You may need to increase your ISO to 400.

If you have a basic point and shoot, then use it in sports mode (which by default uses a high shutter speed). Many point and shoots also allow you to adjust ISO, and some have shutter priority as well. The problem with the point and shoots is the shutter delay.

Regardless of which type of camera you have, make sure you pan your camera with the action, especially if it is that close and you're side on, because otherwise if you point and shoot then you tend to get blurry images. You obviously do not need to pan if the action is coming towards you or away from you, but that's where the shutter delay with point and shoots can be very frustrating.

My camera doesn't have a sports mode. Using a function called Kids and pets...
And of course I guess a bit of the problem is that those riders just bloody won't stand still.

I get that you are trying to get some detail in your shots but those pics are fantastic. The blur captures the essence of speed, pursuit and racing.

Acceptable Pics?

What may we submit? Is it OK to post pictures that we've found on the internet, you know, pictures that we have not personally taken?

Well the idea is that it's your own photos. There are other threads for photos that you've found on the internet, see "classic racing pics", "great giro pictures" etc.

Boeing glad you like them, here's the chasers, (except Evans, who can be seen closing the gap on the two leaders in the last sequence!)

Great thread, with some excellent photos! I've been meaning to take pics of some bike racing for years, and finally did it this weekend at a local criterium. I have to say, a crit was probably the best way to start. I took hundreds of blurry pictures, but with the racers passing by every couple of minutes for the 3 hours I was out there, I had plenty of opportunities for some decent shots. I have a feeling that if I waited hours for the peleton to pass by in a race like Paris-Roubaix, I'd get ten blurry shots in the brief time they pass by.

Here are my favorites from each of the races I was able to see:
