Ladies and Gentlemen,

After reading through these forums, I have been quite impressed with the level of detail and knowledge of the replies. And I thought to myself, if I’m just starting to get into cycling this would be the best place to start. So thank you firstly for reading this thread and if there is anything you can to help aid in my cycling knowledge development, it would be greatly appreciated.

My first problem is my bike. Currently own what I believe is an old Giant TCR, yellow and black with carbon forks. Looking to upgrade, but I have no idea where to start. Things to note, I’m 6’2 and at 95kgs, a bit heavier than your average man, but a lot has to do with heavy muscle from to many visits to the gym. Using the road bike mainly for fitness and for the use in triathlons in the near future. Currently living in Australia, and looking for something in the $2000 - $2500AUS range, a bike with a good frame, and something that I can upgrade the components as I go.

I heard a pretty good review about the Chris Boardman Team Carbon bike on this site, is this a potential????

i dont know what the prices are like in australia..

in the uk, the boardman range offer £ for £ some of the best value you can buy, component wise.. the £750 boardman has components generally found on a £1k plus bike, but ive no idea if that is just overpricing of other bikes in the uk (im tempted to think it is), or slight underpricing of the boardman it being the home market..

Boardman bikes not available in Oz

Boardman bikes aren't available in Australia. They appear to be a UK and Ireland-only brand. So that's out, I'm afraid.

In any case, a key unanswered question is why you would like to upgrade your old bike.

If you want to go faster in non-drafting triathlons, a new road bike isn't going to help much with that. Equipment-wise, your money would be better spent on aero bars, perhaps a TT helmet, and (more expensively) deep-dish wheels of one sort or another.

If it's because the drivetrain is worn out, you could just replace that. For instance, you can buy complete SRAM Rival groupsets on Ebay for about 800 Australian dollars, and get your local bike shop to fit them (though you need to be a bit careful to make sure you buy exactly the right bits). Ditto wheels, pedals, saddles etc. Heck, the single biggest upgrade I've made to my bike was replacing the stock brake pads with Kool-Stop dual compound pads, and it cost all of $25. Turned the bike from marginal on downhills into something that'd just about throw you over the handlebars if you wanted.

But maybe the frame is worn out, or doesn't fit, or something. Then, by all means, go ahead and buy yourself a new bicycle.

If you do decide to go down the new-bike route, some things to think about:

* where do your fitness rides typically take place? Are the roads rough enough to bother you? Do you climb many hills?
* do you plan on riding for longer than a couple of hours at a time? Do you start to feel horribly uncomfortable on your current bike?
* do you ever plan on using this bike to compete in mass-start road races?
* would you be prepared to sacrifice a little bit of speed for some extra comfort?

Once you've figured out the answers to those questions, you'll be better equipped to figure out exactly what bike you want.

Another thing - getting the right-sized bike, and getting it adjusted to fit you, is more important than just about any other feature. I ended up paying for a professional bike fit, and it's made riding much, much, much more comfortable.

You can get a great bike with the money your willing to spend, but not with a carbon frame. At that price point if you go carbon you'll get a noodly heavy monstrosity, while with the same dosh you may be able to grab an 105/Ultegra equipped alu bike and still have money to spend on aero extensions and a good set of knicks. Don't fall the hype that carbon > aluminium.

Heavily (and professionally) biased but I say buy one of these...

Thanks for your post. I must admit, the thought of upgrading the componentry did not enter my mind. Are their any cycling stores in Sydney you can suggest that would help with a professional bike fit and upgrading of componentry?

And the answers to your other questions, my fitness rides are usually on reasonably smooth pavements including a fare few gradients. Currently do not spend longer than 2-3hours on the bike. However, would like to start increasing the ride time. At the end of the 2-3hours, it does start to get a bit uncomfortable. I would like to start road racing and i would definetly sacrifice a little speed for some comfort.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, I'm from Melbourne.

If you are interested in new wheels, you could talk to Greg Ryan at TWE wheels. The wheels seem pretty good to me (they were certainly a huge upgrade from the stock ones) and his customer service is excellent. He custom-builds, so he should be able to build you something that can cope with your size and power output.
