Everything points to Cav signing for Sky, working with Rob Ellingworth, Sky's ability to support his Olympic ambitions, he stature as the best known cyclist in the world and a huge marketing opportunity.

I can't see Sky as a media based company passing up this opprtunity but stranger things have happened.

All the kit issues aren't insurmountable as they have all been dealt with when it concerns other riders.

I guess time will tell ( Ijust wiish it was bloody soon!)

Name me a better known rider in the Pro peloton at this time.;)

In terms of none cycling fans who maybe are into sports the Tour winner at this moment is the Most important so most could name Contador he gets extra press due to clinic issues.

Not a lot of people outside the UK who don´t really watch cycling know who Cav
is.

Most none cycling people would probably say Armstrong :p

I'm talking about the general public who don't follow cycling. Cadel Evans no chance.

He won the tour and alot of Sports interested people that don´t follow cycling know who won the Tour more than they know who the WC is

Yep.

The Tour was on the news more in the UK than Cavs WC win! A lot of people only think cycling exists in July.

I would even put ASchleck was well know. I know a few lads in the office know of him and they dont follow cycling.

No I'm deadly serious.

If you shoewd the average man a picture of Cadel Evans he wouldn't have a clue who he is.

Show them a pic of Cav and they would do the same.

Evens won the Tour de France, the largest most publicised cycling event on the earth. That has to put him over Cav IMO.

It's not the WC that makes him so well known, but the million stages he won in the Tour.

The million stages that get viewed a million times less than the mountain stages and the Monuments in cycling.

A Monument doesn't get 2 billion viewers worldwide. Belgium is not the world.

Flat stages don't get 2 billion viewers either. 4 million for flat stages sound more correct;) Don't use silly hyperboles.

It's not a hyperbole, the Tour does attract about 2 billon viewers every year. I don't know about single stages, but my guess is that it will be more than 4 million

Monuments are only watched by (moderate) cycling fans.

I doubt the Tour has grown 200000000% since 2006....

Monuments hit the double numbers easily in viewing rates ;)

It's just a myth that only Tour stages are watched by the mainstream and Monuments only known by the cycling fans.

Sorry, but that 4 million figure must just be for France.
ITV 4 published their figures for this years Tour:
http://www.bikebiz.com/news/read/itv4-and-halfords-win-big-with-tour-de-france-coverage/011573
When added to UK Eurosport/HD figures, it's around 1 million.

Most of these viewers could only get Le Tour, so that's mainstream, I'm afraid.
UK viewing for the monuments would be around 100,000. (on a good day)

I think those numbers you've found are only for France. The Tour is the most watched annual sports event in the world. It's broadcasted in about 180 countries, so 4 million isn't quite enough. It is, like I said, estimated to be 2 billion, including duplicate viewers.

Could be, but I've also read that flat stages and time trials are viewed a lot less than key mountain stages. So that means any big GC contender is more known than Cav. Plus I'd say Phil had a lot more tv coverage during the Tour than little Cav this year.

It's hard to tell though. If your watching in Belgium your obviously going to get a lot more media surronding Phil then Cav but in the UK obviously we have a lot more Cav shoved down our throats. I would say Contador is more well known worldwide than Cav and maybe Andy and Cadel but not the other GC guys.
