Hi guys,

I'm currently thinking about my dissertation topic and I was wondering are any of you aware of any big studies/reports compiled on the perceived benefits of sponsoring a professional cycling team?

Thanks

Well, I'm not certain what you're looking for, but heck...I'm always willing to help you college kids with "class projects". So here are a couple of benefits that I would demand if I considered sponsoring a professional team.
!. Get to hang out with those podium girls at the finish lines.
2. Have my personal bike maintained by the team mechanic.
3. All the lube I need...for free.
4. Rub shoulders with Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin. We'd clink beer mugs and sing old rugby songs until the tavern owners toss our asses out onto the cobbles.
5. My usual complaining about the flat stages of the TDF would still fall on deaf ears but at least it would be reported in Cyclingnews under the heading, "Team Sponsor Blasts Tour for Boring Stages."

I would advise you to first take a broader view. Search for general literature regarding the effects of sponsorship in sports, then try to zoom in to cycling.

In his autobiog, Laurent Fignon discussed the issue of sponsorship in the late 1980s and claimed it was well worth it back then.

Needless to say, he didn't exactly roll in a flipchart full of metrics. This is, like pretty much any other evidence I would think you'd find, both brief and completely anecdotal.

email the successful teams sponsors. Bike manufacturers do benefit. Twek and Specialized are probably the 2 most recent sponsor who benefitted form their sponsorship.

But email the same to HTC ;)

Festina benefitted hugely from the 1998 TdF scandal involving Team Festina being thrown off the tour.

You may want to consider event marketing (ex. races, rides) more than the team-side of cycling. It might be a little easier to collect metrics.

Of course, if you want to use the dissertation as an excuse to travel and potentially meet people getting paid in Pro cycling, why not?
