Drugs in rugby

Had a very interesting conversation with a semiprofessional rugby player recently.

Clenbutorol is rampant. He can get it in 5 minutes. All his mates do it, and he commented that 'roid/HGH abuse is glaringly obvious when he sees mates return from off-season break looking unfeasibly massive.

Testing is an irrelevance. They are forewarned by coach.

I think it is obvious you only have to look at the size and leanness of the players who play at a reasonable level. There used to be a big variation in size between players i.e. some fat, some slim, some muscular. Now they are all muscular and lean its common for backs to be 100Kg plus and 10% (or less) body fat = not normal.

Oh I agree, totally, it is obvious. Those foreheads

Its just that you don't often here it from the horses mouth

I wouldn't say testing is an irrelevance.

There's 10 UK players currently serving a ban, 9 of them due to a positive test (Or a negative intelligence test if you like).

Its so obviously prevalent that what used to be my favorite sport to play and watch, I barely bother finding.
There is no enjoyment in watching drug fueled cheats batter each other. If I want to watch that I'll turn on the NFL.

Just look at the current sanctions on the UKADA website.

Tried to find it.

its the new stuff.

10-15 years ago, those muscleheads meatheads who competed in Mr Olympia would be about 240lbs at 4% bf when COMPETING. They would walk around at about 280lbs (rule of thumb, they all were +/- 30lbs of figures I am quoting. And they would have been heavy at about 15% to 20% bf. Most folk seeing the bodybuilders on the street at 300lbs would have thought they were fat, but it was only a small percentage of fat they were looking at, it was mostly muscle. Even with the distended belly and protusion of the hgh gut.

Now they walk around lean, about 10%, out of competition, and only have to lose a few % of fat.

In cycling parlance, I think it was MGTHB (more glorious than hookers and blow) who coined it, "NOT NORMAL".

Except the All Blacks. They are cleans. If you don't count the Samoan Steroid (Taro).

I heard from a reliable source (friend of neighbours, cousins, postman) that the Warriors League team got 2 weeks notice before a test and they could nominate who got tested. So yeah, they are trying pretty hard to catch people.....

Exactly. Everyone knows hat the All Blacks physique is all down to how much they practise the haka. As this video from 1973 proves. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=d27_1384687773

Irrefutable evidence they are cleans:
1. Anglo-Saxon
2. Speak English
3. Come from my mother country
Case closed.

That Haka was embarrassing BTW. I could confidently say 99.9% of people would rather not know if the AB's are doping. If a journalist tried to do some digging they would be hung for treason.

Look at how much came out of the investigation into the Cronulla Sharks, especially Paul Gallen. Diddly squat.

Last summer I saw him doing a beach run with a trainer at Maroubra, the guy looked like a cheesegrater, there was no fat to be seen. Take a look at the difference between him 5-6 years ago and now - he's barely recognisable.

Hung for treason? They'd be publicly lynched so viciously the Taliban would cringe.

I know an ex rugby union pro (who retired over 10 years ago) who insists it is all diet/training related. The physiques are partly down to professionalism but also down to illegal methods.

It's amazing to see the difference in body size from then to now. BTW I went to school with ex Scottish rugby captain Jason White, who was 6"2 when he was 12. What shocked me the most was how normal he looked on telly next to the other Rugby players. I have also had the pleasure of working with a few AB's TBH none of them seems too massive. SBW however, is clearly on something.

I know a current union and a current league pro, both internationals. The training is certainly part of it, you don't look like that just by taking drugs. no way I'd put my neck on the line for either of them though and I played junior rugby with one and he is from my home town. It's pretty obvious there is rampant drug abuse, and union is just about catching up with league.

I haven't got much hard evidence, but here goes. I went to a UK sports college back in 1979. A mate of mine was in the college's rugby team, he told me he took amphetamines before every game to make himself more aggressive. Roll on 20 years and a number of my colleagues were working on a methodology for detecting the misuse of certain drugs in sport. One was a good friend of mine and we often discussed cycling. He had access to a lot of data relating to British athletes, and when I asked him about doping in rugby, he remarked that the weights suggested that many of them were on drugs. He also knew some of the inside information on the Modahl case that effectively bankrupted the British Athletics Federation.

What my colleague and friend, no, not the same university. My colleague was working on this: `The development of decision limits for the implementation of the GH-2000 detection methodology using current commercial insulin-like growth factor-I and amino-terminal pro-peptide of type III collagen assays.' amongst other things.

Interesting read. Simon Gaskell was one of my lecturers in undergraduate, I'm not sure who he told but we all knew about his involvement in the Modahl case.

The research my department was doing was shown to the IOC, a couple of my colleagues went for a high level meeting with it. They were there to pitch an idea for detecting GH use in athletes. Samaranch put up an `expert' from his home town who spent the whole meeting saying the research didn't stack up. End result a potential way of detecting GH abuse was sidelined. My colleagues were disgusted.

Aren't ASADA still preparing the case to present to the NRL?

On a Paul Gallen related note, Brian Smith, former head coach and now an assistant somewhere I think alluded in an article to Gallen's doping. It referred to someone he turned down at Parra as they were too small. About 18 months later the same person turned up at another club massive. In most league circles it was recognised he was talking about Gallen.

Anyway a lot of rugby (league & union) are on a pretty good program these days. Backs 100kg+ with no body fat and running like lightning? Please.
