What a sad and tragic story. This gay couple have cycled all over the world together on their orange tandem. RIP.

Two Dutch women were killed in a traffic accident in central Argentina on Sunday morning, local time. The couple were riding a tandem when they were hit by a truck.

The driver says they suddenly crossed in front of him and he couldn’t avoid hitting them. Police say it is possible that the pair, Sandra Polderman and Ellen Baarslag, were blown into the path of the vehicle by the wind. Police also say it is possible that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

According to the Argentine newspaper El Diario de la República, the driver has been detained by police and could be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Polderman and Baarslag were on an eight-week cycling tour of Argentina. They had previously toured Asia, the USA and Australia on their orange tandem, dubbed ‘Mean Machine’.

They were keeping a blog and a facebook page of the trip: the last entry read: “During this trip, we realise again and again, that we’ve really got it good in the Netherlands and how happy we are due to that simple accident of birth that made us Dutch. So, Viva Argentina! But Lang Leve Nederland as well.”

RIP, it's a pretty good effort to cycle all over the world with some good old fashioned touring. Something I've wanted to do, so good on them for realizing their dreams.
