5.9 earthquake in the DC area.

Our flight to Europe yesterday was cancelled so we are sitting around a hotel lobby waiting to go to the airport again tonight. Then we started rocking and rolling!

I sure hope Dulles stays open and we can get out of here tonight -- after all, the hurricane is on its way too!

My office is on the 7th floor of a building in downtown DC - the entire building was swaying noticeably for about 15-20 seconds. Then we got the hell out of there. Must have been a couple thousand people on the sidewalks in the area.

Earthquakes and hurricanes - what's next? A plague? :)

Weird that there'd be a 5.8 in Colorado this morning and then a 5.8 on the East Coast just a few hours later.

OMG!!!!!!Ha! The last earthquake we had here in San Diego, one of the cats went immediately to protect our valuable dust bunnies under the bed. And stayed there for two hours!! Devastating!!

But the dust bunnies survived, right?

Dulles Airport never closed and we have checked in for our flight this evening. Just heard an announcement that a KLM flight is slightly delayed because the crew got caught in the earthquake traffic jam.

My 82-year-old mother several hundred miles away in North Carolina felt the tremor, too. Of course, she is preparing to evacuate because of the approaching hurricane. My brother is going to pick her up and take her to his DC-area home -- is that really such a good idea???

An unforgettable end to an unforgettable vacation, that's for sure!

ok, for you newbies to earthquakes (me? 64 alaska, seattle(nisqually), san diego easter 09, on and on) I like to go out on to the street and do my "shake rattle and roll" dance. Easties, you got some brick damage. Jeeeezuz Howard Christ. Japan got it bad and all I see on 'Merican news is some brick damage in Virginia. And Susan, yes, the dust bunnies survived just fine. That was a true 5.9

I am 15mi west of DC and Susan's visit resulted in me going home early for a bike ride: they closed my office early and threw us out into a far greater danger...traffic.

Yeah, but:

"I think the most important point in that regard, is that the Earth's crust is a lot colder there, so energy travels much further without being dissipated. Even though it's a 5.9, it's a lot bigger deal than a 5.9 would be in California or Nevada."

So there. :)

This was the fourth quake I've experienced (the other three were not on the east coast - one in Belize, two in Alaska), but this one was by far the largest and most noticeable of the four.

UPDATE: The east coast earthquake apparently was caused by an unknown fault line running under D.C. and through Virginia. It is now being called Obama's Fault, though Obama will say it's really Bush's Fault. Other theories are that it was the founding fathers rolling over in their graves or that what we all believed to be an earthquake was actually the effects of a 14.6 trillion dollar check bouncing in Washington.

Edit: this just in: Standard and Poor just downgraded the earthquake to a 3.0.

i knew it...

Even in the Netherlands we had earthquakes. Most notable the one in Roermond in 1992 (which happens to be were I live.) 5.8 on richter. There were cracks in our walls...
And on the ground:

we're right over the Peelbreuk vault line.
Geologists say a big earhtquake here in the future is inevitable. Research suggests 2000 years ago there was a big earthquake in the region which is geological a very short time ago :p
