''A sports scientist has recommended giving the England team Viagra at next year's World Cup in South Africa to help them cope with playing at altitude.

He said: "I'll point out to the England squad the potential benefits of using Viagra for games played at altitude.

"It's scientifically proven that the process of how Viagra works in the body, by enlarging the blood vessels, can improve performance of some athletes.''

Would Viagra really help? If it does surely half the peloton is taking it.

I am sure they would all be line up for a TUE.

Actually, cyclingnews has an article on the subject: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/riders-using-viagra-for-altitude

I read that it was added to the banned substances list this year.

Will there be stiff penalties?

I don't recall the details, but during the 2007 or 2008 Giro the car belonging to the father of one of the riders was checked and he had a stockpile of Viagra along with other meds.

I'll let someone else do the Tiger Woods joke.

Not banned, just monitored for 2009

WADA Q&A said:
As regards sildenafil (Viagra), WADA is aware of studies presented
in relation to the potential of sildenafil to restore pulmonary
capacities at very high altitudes. WADA is currently funding a
number of research projects on the effects of sildenafil at various
altitudes. These projects are ongoing.

Viagra is nitric oxide it is suposed to grow muscle improve grothe hormone move blood to the muscles.

Nitric oxide is used to relax arteries and lower blood presure so before you go out and try it just use 1/4 of a pill or better still try the amenio acid L-Arginine
they claim it dose same naturaly.

L-Arginine has lowered my blood presure from 145 to 110 so I dont need drugs yet

So far the UCI have not banned it maybe they use it them selves

At least they were blunt about why it is has been promoted. Performance enhancing on the field is the main aim. Heck with the term WAG created for the English soccer team, they'll have enough to distract their attention next June besides the women in their beds (or men if that is how they roll).

I'll give the Poms this much, at least they aren't Bulgaria. The players claimed regular sex improved match performance. Explains why they went nowhere back in 2004 when the comment was made.
