Oh great, if it wasn't enough that José Been is doing the Maryland Classic, she's paired up with the unfortunately not-proficient-enough-english-speaker Jip Van Den Bos. Atleast she might be able to correct some of the mistakes Been is going to make.
It’s the 4th televised race of the day. Hardly a surprise that they will be well down the depth chart in terms of available commentators for this broadcast.

It appears that Been is becoing frustrated with Jip - I am not worried about her English level, but she seems to be poorly prepared and therefore struggles to give meaningful insight for the viewer.

This the same Been who resorts to talking about dinosaurs and paleontology when she has nothing useful to add to a race inbetwixt RobHatchisms ?

I liked Jips contributions during Tour de Suisse, I think it was last time she was on English comms duty, maybe its the perennial problem of who you are paired with, plus both would be remote from each other, Been works from home, which makes it harder to build an easy rapport between them.

Nah - Posted at the time of Suisse that's Jip commemtary was like that of a fan, full of cliches and offered no analysis - sadly there was no improvent during the Maryland coverage - if she could get to half the level of Been's competence then we have a winner.

Does she do it while there's noteworthy race-action going on, or during those uneventful stages were commentators need to fill the air?

depends how you define noteworthy I guess, I remember there was one race recently where they just decided nothing much was happening so went off at a tangent on geology. At least Kirbys witterings tend to be semi related to the race in hand, and not just whatever shes been reading about lately.

and she tweets during races shes commentating on, so Im not convinced her whole attention is necessarily engaged on the job in hand.

Who was that woman sitting in for Orla on GCN. I quite liked her...seemed calm and measured

But was a bit cheeky at one stage when she said
"We'd all like a bit of Rui Costa inside us"
I could see Dan LLyod and Adam Blythe were trying to keep it together

That comment came after yesterday's from Sean Kelly when he talked about why so many cyclists are swingers

It has become a right Carry on up the Tourmalet :)

Abi Stephens, she does lots of other sports hosting for various other broadcasters, do pops up alot on various channels
For my sins I quite like watching speedway, she presents the Eurosport coverage of the speedway grand prix series and also the British league.
Probably would do a better job of the mountain bike coverage than the present incumbent.

When Chris died, they took away our best commentator, but Vinjebo and in particular Lars Bak is filling the shoes as best as they can. Great commentary from both of them, often spot on tactically and usually better at reading a race than Rolf.

Now Staghøj just needs to be replaced. Guy is spending half the time asking his co-commentator if that rider isn't rider x and a few funny jokes here and there doesn't make up for it.

Speaking of former riders, Asbjørn Kragh is the dirt worst commentator I have ever listened to. Just bring in Bastian Emil ffs, what's so hard about that.

You don't have GCN+?
No I don't. Im able to watch any race that Im interested in as is

Also Im usually listening to the Vuelta on my way back from work and I wanted to punch the steering wheel when he said Vuelta Asturias wasn't a race anymore and that is now named Gran Camino. I didn't do it though!

But now I know he isn't reading Libertine's comments on CN on Spanish stage racing, past and present, or share the love of Mosquera. Or simply just using PCS....
