Well it ain't British Eurosport's error instantly that their original cycling commentator is dead (went in pension first) while the other allegedly turns out to be a pedophile. They've had enough years to hire someone new with a clue about cycling instead of Kirby though ...

German Eurosport's lucky that Karsten Migels has become the German voice of cycling. Once he's gone they've got the same problem as the Anglos or the NOS after Mart Smeets stopped commentating the bike races live.

Kirby is an insufferable moron.

How in the world can you spend as much time as he does commentating on cycling and be so unknowledgeable about the sport. He's clueless, completely and utterly clueless. If only we could have coverage with ambient noise or race radio instead of his verbal diarrhea.
I'm approaching my wit's end with him. I know I shouldn't let it bother me so much but why, oh why, can eurosport not just hire someone with a **** clue!
Ahem.
Once again, I'm going to insist that you and others cease and desist bashing my man, m'kay?
Kirby is a legend among mere mortals.
Carry on.

Re:

I appreciate enthusiasm but it's tiresome how the Eurosport commentators just never be quiet, and they're hardly saying anything really informative. There are so many basic informative things that cycling commentators could be saying when they go on and on about irrelevant things instead.

I hardly hear anything more informative than "it looks like [insert team] is driving the pace" while the camera literally is showing the viewers that. Would it be difficult to tell us why that team is doing that? Or why other teams aren't, for example? I feel like cycling could get significantly more viewers if the coverage was better.

Ambient noise with race radio for audio would be a huge improvement over some of the commentary pairs to me personally. Watching sports without sound just feels too hollow.

I think in the last 2km of Wallonie today he confused Gaviria and Vakoc.
Shortly after saying that the break will survive while the peloton was literally a few seconds from catching the break as the break sat up. Comical

You can actually get ambient noise if you have Eurosport player. Sadly they stopped Eurosport player for my TV last month but in bigger races like the GTs, probably the monuments and WT races and even small races they can't provide commentary for (eg Handzame Classic or some other small 1.1 like that), you can switch to a stream direct from a motorbike if you're lucky, but sometimes just the finish line noise.

So yesterday Kirby seemed obsessed with Rigoberto Uran. He only knows about 6 pro riders and had obviously decided to look at Urans palmares pre-race.
Fortunately I was able to watch in Spain so a completely Carlton Kirby free day but I can imagine exactly what he was doing.

Rob Hatch is on holiday but it wouldn't make any difference. The powers that be at Eurosport seem to be completely on board with the cult of Kirby, now perpetuated by the parroting of his banalities on Twitter. He is obviously first choice whenever he is available. As we say over here, there's no accounting for taste.

That is so depressing to hear.

Rob Hatch has tweeted that he will be back for the Abu Dhabi race from Thursday, so there will be some relief. CK will be doing the Six Day, no doubt.
