Finding cheap US flights

Dear USAers,

Our vacation this summer will involve domestic flights. Where do you look to find the best prices? I know Kayak.com, are there other recommendations?

Thanks.

Susan

Expedia.

It also depends on what cities you are flying from/to. There are not as many low cost carriers as there are in Europe. Southwest, Virgin, and a few regional guys.

If you play the game and use one airline as your carrier, using points and taking advantages of the upgrades, I have found over the last couple of years that sometimes the best rates are found on the actual airline website.
For us, traveling as a family , we have really appreciated the upgrades and used points for free hotel rooms and cars, which sometimes greatly outweighs the worry over a few $ on the airline tix.
good luck and happy traveling :)

Expedia.

Get an account going with them and they will spam you with sales on tickets.

we are flying Washington DC to Rapid City, SD, and back. Delta, United and Continental seem to be our choices, and none of them are cheap.

We are both frequent flyers with Air France, think Delta is in with them. Must check out if we can do something with that.

Thanks.

I live in Rapid City, SD. There is no such thing as a cheap flight in the summer months. And rarely is there anything cheap in the other months. Sturgis Motocycle Rally, or Black Hills Fat Tire Festival?

Yeah, you are stuck. None of the cheap carriers will serve Rapid City. Delta is part of sky team and code share with AF. You will have to connect via Minneapolis.

Neither, although we will overlap with Sturgis for a few days. We are doing Badlands and Black HIlls.

Can I be in touch with you later about suggestions on what to see and do?

Thanks.

Agreed with RR here. You should be able to use AF points...but hurry as the codeshare seats are sucked up quick...(at least my experience)

GL (and if you figure out the magic method let us know...my wife hates driving when we're stateside :D)

Lol, I'm more comfortable driving there than here in Germany. We have had a number of road-trip vacations in the US over the years.

Fly to Minneapolis and rent a car. If you're going to rent anyways that might not be a bad option.

That would be awfully far to drive. We only have 9 days, and the cabins are already rented.

We're going to end up renting three different times this vacation. First we will visit my Mom in North Carolina (car nr. 1), then drop our son off at my brother in DC when my husband and I fly to SD (car nr.2) and then fly back to DC for a family party and a few last days before flying home (car nr. 3).

This won't be a cheap vacation!

By the way, it was our son's choice to stay with his uncle (vacation without mom and dad!) instead of going to South Dakota.

You can absolutely contact me for more information on the area. Send me a PM, and I will do my best to respond with meaningful information about specific areas and activities.

Custer State Park because of the animals, and Needles Highway. Both are fantastic. There are some great hikes off of Needles too.

Check out USA 3000,good deals can be had if booked in advance.
My wife, son and myself go from Cleveland,Ohio to Ft. Meyer Florida round trip non-stop for about 700 us dollars and some change.
Wife usually starts looking about 3 to 4 months early.
Hope this helps, have a great vacation.

Thank, I'll take a look. We really have to get this settled soon.

Now the question is whether to pay with dollars or euros. I really wanted to use the dollars, but with the dollar being rock-bottom against the Euro at the moment, it's a tough decision.

Both are planned. We wanted to stay in Custer, but it was just too expensive, and we would rather find one place to stay for the whole week.

We camped the whole time because I love camping, and I am a cheapskate. Also, by not driving from Minn, you will miss the Cornpalace in Mitchell SD, so maybe you can catch it the next time...

You are the second person to recommend the Corn Palace.

We are not the camping types. I suggested to my husband that we consider an RV, since we have never tried one, and he said very definitely Nein!

We found a little log cabin in Hill City for a very reasonable price. We prefer a cabin as we can cook there. It is not so much the expense of eating every meal out but more that at some point it just gets to be too much food!
