I leave out Greg Van Avermaet, as he is still racing and has a good chance of winning tomorrow ....

Freddy Maertens 1977.

Should've been De Vlaeminck in that poll

I voted "other" but only did it to make sure the poll was working after I tried to fix it.

It seems to be working fine now, disregard my vote.

Cheers mate & thanks a lot ... was my first poll here ....

yeah De Vlaeminck doing something which was later to be known as "a Gerrans" ....
on the other hand Maertens got disqualified later for use of amphetamines

to me it's a tight decision between Sean Kelly and Freddie Maertens, both being perfectly suited to win this race (actually multiple times ...) ...

How bout Gilbert?

Ups, I see your point on not including GVA there. And Gilbert probably hasn't targeted/been close enough multiple times.
2010 and 2011 PG was on the podium, that's pretty close.
Yeah I realise that, but compared to Hoste's 3 2nd places.. But in 2011 he was very close indeed, not so much for 2010 considering that moto up front. :p

No he wasn't... the 2011 podium was nuyens, cance and chavanel.
In 2010 i think no one was close to beat cance, not even boonen.

Sorry, you're right.

It was 2009 that he placed third and 2010 that he placed second.

Gilbert was 3rd in 2010 behind Canc and Boonen.
I read the results too fast when trying to write my comment. My original comment was based on PG being on the podium more than once, that's the point I was trying to get across. Also my original comment was based on results from "Procycling Stats.com", apparently they have the results wrong because they list Gilbert as being in third place in 2011 and 2010. If anyone wants to nitpick anyone it should be Procyclingstats.com because they're supposed to be a reputable source of pro cycling information. Apparently they make mistakes as well as I do...

I wasn't trying to nitpick anyone. And CQ ranking is definitely much more reliable than PCS.

Yeah, I just lost all faith in Procyclingstats. I'll be going to CQ ranking from now on. :)

I really hope that the next gen of cycling fans won't have to include Vanmarcke in this poll.

Sep should be flattered to be on a small shortlist with Kelly and Maertens. Leif Hoste is hilariously out of his proper league here.

That said, I also really want him to win the Ronde at least once.
