I was going post this in January but decided to wait it out see how the temperature goes this late winter.

Well, it's official. Freds are out in force earlier than usual. Typically we see them on the road mid March maybe April. but with the warm temps and no need for vest and warmers this winter the Freds are out like never before.

From Seal Beach to Scripps Ranch. wall to wall fred.

Where do they come from?

BTW I do not discriminate. Chicks can be Freds too.

saw a guy on the road today with about 30 cable ties sticking up on his helmet, all porcupine stylee. Magpie season was about 4-5 months ago...
In Brisbane there were people who would ride like that ALL year! Surprisingly nobody uses zip ties here in Perth. There's so many gumbies here I thought they would be all over it.

This is why I bump around on dirt tracks on my mtb. I'm safe from the fashion/style nazis there!

Fred

so core.................................... righteous

I've started seeing a few people using their iPhone + Strava as bike computers lately, combined with some weird battery attachment behind the stem.

It's hilarious asking them how they are going to call their significant other or medical help if they have a crash and the bike gets written off...

A couple of minor points a female Fred is a Wilma. A rider sucking your wheel is actually improving your air flow and will make you a little faster and the annoyance at their presence will increase your intensity regardless of your intent to recover. So Following Freds improve your fitness.

Sorry for being really dumb, but what exactly is a "Fred"?

You really don't want to know what a Fred is or Who Freds are. They are annoying , if there was a Fred spray we could buy it at a hardware store and spray it all around our bikes , it might keep them away until Fred season is over .

I haven't ridden my bike since late november because of the rain/cold/ too lazy to get out of bed early on the weekends and too little day light time in the afternoon. Does that mean i am a fred? lol

I much prefer ramping up my gym hours during the winter instead of taking the risk of ridding my bike on the wet/cold and little day light.

No it does not mean you are a Fred if you don't want to ride in the sleet and bad weather . If just means you don't want to get frost bite and that comes back every year whether it snows or is close to snow.
It means you hate cleaning your bike unnecessarily and that is smart too. lol

It could also mean he is tired of dealing with freds

In the coldest day of the year, where i live, the chances of getting a frost bite/catching snow, are absolutely 0. Having below 0º c temps after 7 am is very rare and after 9 am impossible.

And i like riding in the rain( the cold not so much) i just don't like riding in the dark and that seems like logical and very Darwinian(does this word even exist?) decision.

Oh and there are no freds on my roads, in my area all freds ride MTB and i love them for that :p

Not everything is perfect for me either.

While you complain about the freds, since all freds and non freds in my area ride MTB that means i mostly ride solo which is why i rarely do long rides. Longest i have done solo was 4 and a half hours and my normal ride is is between 1 and half, 2 and a half hours.

I also doubt you guys have an arch nemesis on the road!! Freaking Focus bike guy <_<
