Hi everyone,

I have just bought one of the above crank sets, it has come with one what can only be described as a "wavey washer", is this normal?? The exploded view on the FSA website seems to come with a lot more washers etc.

I've fitted it, but I've had to mount said wavey washer on the drive side to stop the chain rubbing on the inside of the outer chainring.

To be honest, I've just replaced a DA 7800 crank with this, it doesn't feel anywhere near as stiff but I'm hoping the dramatic difference is just the lack of parts!

Or is it that its just no where near as stiff, the bike is not as responsive.

Cheers

Mike

I run two bikes with FSA pro SLK cranks one has a FSA BB and the other has a Shimano Durace BB and both work well I have no washers except what is built into the crank. they are stiffer than my New Campy 11 speed cranks noted when removing a pedal the campy are way softer.

Could be a bad batch its possible depending where you got it. Some of the factory rejects find their way into the market especialy in China

I got it from Planet X so I don't think it not factory reject. Better not be, I'm not a factory reject kinda cyclist! :)

Hmmmmm..... If I fit it without anything what so ever the spindle is slightly long so the crank moves when fully tightened through the BB, I need the couple of mm to stop that movement.

No problems what so ever with the DA chainset though!?

Will it fit in the DA bb?? mine dose never measured them but I always asumed same.
You got me now I will have to pull mine appart and check size not this week but I now want to know.
I always had issues with Campy I ended up with 3 wavy washers in it.

ive got fsa slk bb30 cranks and had that problem at first, because the bike shop didn't have a torqure wrench capable of going up to 45nm, luckily i had one at home and this fixed the problem and they are pretty stiff now, whereas before hand they seemed to slop sideways like the handles on a foosball table, if that doesnt fix it fsa said they have extra washers avaliable but these are only avaliable on request.

Please point to the information that led you to believe the
SLK might be stiffer than the DA? I am curious

Ah ha!! I will try and crank it right up then!

I'm always dubious when I see toques such as 45nm! I abide by all the others though but some how 6nm doesn't seem so threatening!!

A drop of locktight on the thread also. Like the old squar taper nuts you need to lean on them a bit and check again in a few weeks.

And will add. What BB are you using? FSA have umpteen versions of the megaExo some with o-rings some without just make sure you are looking at the correct instructions for your crankset. And make sure you install all of the parts listed otherwise the left arm may work itself loose and mangle the spindle in the process. There are lots of horror stories to peruse over on weight weenies.

Wavy washer goes on the left hand side before LH crank arm. Chain rubbing on the inside of the outer ring when smaller cogs is NORMAL with the multi cog systems of today.

GREASE on the bolt, then tighten to torque. NOT loctite unless you never want to get it out again. Square taper crank bolts? DRY spindle, grease on the bolts, around the washer, tighten to torque. I have never re-checked them, have never had a crank come loose in 27 years on mine and a zillion customers. Old 'techniques' die hard.

FSA for me is a distant, distant 3rd or 4th choice behind Campagnolo or shimano. Truvativ/sram/FSA stuff is not on par with the other two. mentioned.

This is the reply i got from FSA, within 1 hour of sending i might ad, not bad customer service!

You probably have already tried tightening the crankbolt. But the most common cause of the play you’re describing is because the crankbolt isn’t tight enough. The torque is quite high (45Nm) and tightening the bolt with just a 10mm allen wrench won’t give you the proper spec. We did a test here where we had our sales guys try to tighten the crankbolt to what they thought was 45Nm, none of them got above 35Nm- so if a torque wrench wasn’t used during installation, it might be a good idea to get one on your bolt.

The other thing is, we produced small shims (shown on page 3 of the attachment) to help with differences in frame tolerances. Since all the different bike companies have different frame tolerances, the MS188 shims may be needed in some instances. I see your in Australia. Your local shop should be able to get the MS188 shims from SCV Imports. If the bolt is tightened to spec and the crank is still moving side to side, the shims may be in order.

Please note that the wave spring washer should never be fully compressed, but compressed to about .6-1mm thickness. The last cause of the play may be simply a worn or broken wave spring washer (which doesn’t sound like is the case here, but throwing it out there).

Let me know if anything else comes up.

Thanks for all your responses guys!! Really appreciated!!

Not too fussed with the mention of chain rubbing on the outer ring being normal mind!

Off it comes and on to the none drive side it goes then!! Have bought a huge Park torque wrench as my LBS doesn't have one........ Concerning!
