It's been posted 6 times in the "Cool/funny videos of cyclists" thread but now it's got its own thread. It was about time.

Not wanting to prolong a dead thread... but i will bite... why is the yellow jersy yellow.

It's the colour of the paper used by l'Auto , now l'Equipe, was printed on.

The brothers Schleck are charming, as this video evidences. It makes me wonder at the criticisms and active venom spouted on this forum by some members. Why the hate? What have they done wrong?

From a state of indifference, I am now a new convert as a result of this video.

The lady was pure genius btw. I'm in awe.h

I've always liked the Schleck brothers. I don't always like their attitude on the bike... wait no... I don't always like Andys attitude regarding cycling. Only try to win L-B-L and the TdF and ignore everything else. Whine about a descent etc.
Besides that they certainly are nice guys.

im not *****ing, im just saying, that surely most cyclists should have some sort of knowledge of the history of the sport. thats all.

I always thought that knowledge of the cycling tradition is handed down was the knowledge of the history of the sport.

The reason why the Yellow jersey is yellow is so well known that for the Schlecks not to know this seems pathetic, but signing up with Hog rubber stamps that.

It's surprising considering their father competed at the highest level and I'm pretty certain rode the Tour as a domestique. Having the sport quite prominent in the family and in their upbringing one would think that they would know a bit more of its history.

According to the book “A Race for Madmen” the reason why the yellow jersey is yellow is not the reason given above; that is an urban myth. It was because a yellow jersey was cheapest when they went to buy a jersey for the Tour leader.

hmmm, i think I will take the Uran Myth over the opinion of one author.

What we do know is that Henri Desgrange creator of the race, was also the editor of L’Auto, the newspaper that funded the race. It certainly wasnt a cost cutting measure as prior to the jersey the leader wore an armband, if it was about money they would have just continued with that

Just as long as they didn't post that stupid picture of them doing the Safety Dance or whatever it was, I am happy.

I used to be a Schleck fangirl. I even defended their right to leave Bjarne Riis to start their new team based in their homecountry. But I didn't like the way they did it, I don't see they have a reason to bear a grudge against Bjarne, he did a lot for them. And the way they behaved in the 2011 tour, Andy in particular, I didn't find charming at all. Bad excuses, lack of respect for the competition, Andy feeling entitled to the victory. I think Andy looked more and more like a spoiled brat.

Then the Radioshack merger came, and that was when I lost any sympathy for the Schlecks. Many people, not only riders but other staff too, had left good secure jobs to help form team Leopard. They trusted that it would exist for at least four years as promised. Less than a year later they are out of job while the fickle Schleck brothers are praising Bruyneels good qualities as a DS in the press. They don't care that they let all the people down who believed in them. They just want to be big in the US.

I agree with a lot that you say but this bit is not quite accurate, at least to my understanding. For the longest time it looked like Riis would be unable to find a sponsor for the following year. Then another team came along and offered jobs, so many people chose to go with that rather than wait and see what Riis could do. Not a single rider prolongued their contract with Riis, Breschel and Rasmussen went to other teams and Hoj retired.

The fact that now many were forced out of their "secure" jobs is quite terrible indeed but it would be a bit unfair to solely blame the Schlecks for that. It looks like the main men behind the merger were Becca, Burke and Bruyneel and I don't know how much the Schlecks could have done to stop it (if they had wanted to). Of course they are now praising Bruyneel in the press, I don't know whether it is truthfull or not but in any case they couldn't do much else ...

Not just Sidwells, but Woodland also in his book .

Listen, I am just saying that it is quite well documented that there is dispute about how the jersey became yellow, so I would not criticise the Schlecks for not knowing something that is not known for sure.

Actually, not really because it was the cheapest, but because that's the only color in which they had 15 jerseys of different sizes. Apparently, back then yellow wasn't all that popular.

Christian, I somewhat agree with you, Bjarne struggled to find a sponsor, and then who can blame those whose contracts are running out if they look for another job. Also i perfectly understand that when the Schlecks had the chance to start a team in their homeland they had to take it. I just don't see why they had to disrespect Bjarne and badmouth him afterwards.

As I said, it's just surprising to me considering their family background.
