Giro d'Italia 2011 Stage 20: Verbania - Sestriere 242km

stage_20_map_600.jpg

stage_20_profile_600.jpg

This has been called the toughest Giro in history. Its stages have received praise around the world.

It was called the toughest Giro for its two passes of Mount Etna.
It was called the toughest Giro for the weekend in the Dolomites. For the mtf on Grossglockner, for 7 hours of cat 1climbs and 6000m in ascent, which Alberto Contador called the toughest stage of his life.
It was called the toughest Giro for Monte Zoncolan, the gateway to hell.

But the Giro has yet to reveal its fiercest mountain.

Its been used only once before.

The Colle delle Finestre

colle-delle-finestre.jpg

If the Zoncolan is where legends are made, the Finestre is where they are broken.

The year was 2005. Paolo Salvodeli went into the final mountain stage with a 2 minute 9 second lead over second place Gilberto Simoni. They could see from the profile it was going to be tough. But no one was prepared for what was to come. As groups of riders went on the attack, Simoni managed to get himself into one with Di Luca and Rujano, and the race leader struggled to limit his losses.

The Finestre had caused the Malia Rosa to lose 2 minutes 23 seconds to his fierce challenger, making Gibo the virtual race leader with 15km to go. But with between 8 and 20 bonus seconds on the line The Falcon was in need of the performance of his life.

diluca-finestre.jpg

On the descent Salvodeli took back a whole minute putting him back in the lead but needing to put a good performance in on Sestrieres. As Simoni's group of 3 disintegrated into every man for himself , Gibo could only watch as with Rujano speeding away for the 20 bonus seconds, a potential 3rd Giro title flew out of his reach and Salvodeli took home the Maglia Rosa in extraordinary fashion.

For 6 years since, the Finestre has lay hidden from the Giro, deep in the Alpes.

Until now.

The stage starts in Verbania and is mostly flat for the next 200k. While for this reason the first part of the stage might seem relatively insignificant it should not be written off. Yes it is flat, but it is also very long. This is the longest stage of the 2011 Giro and it has been saved for last.

140km might not be felt by the riders. 200 however after 19 days in the saddle, will be felt big time.

And that’s where the Colle delle finestre comes into play.

Situated in Piemont and with a hight gain of : 1694 m, the Finestre is best described as unforgiving.

1278158753_bb0bf8ffea.jpg

Unforgiving because it maintains a consistently high gradient, offering no flatter sections for even a little bit of a restbite.

Unforgiving because it is has an average gradient of 9.2%.

Unforgiving because it lasts for 18 and a half kilometres.

18 and a half kilometres, the last 17 of which don’t go under 8.3%

But that is not where the difficulties of the Finestre stop.

If the Zoncolan or Grossglockner, are adrelaline fuelled pschycos , packing in their high gradients into small spaces to put off riders, the Finestre is a cold calculated killer.

First, to break the riders, the climb throws in her steepest ramp early with a 14% section being hit at 1.9km , with over 16km of climbing still to go.

This is an early cull. Only the strongest survive. With the exception of a few superdomestiques and any riders up the road, the chances of individuals to help their team leader's ends here.

The climb then maintains a steady but very high average for kilometre after kilometre, breaking everyone and anyone who miscalculates their effort even slightly. The sharp turns the riders are forced to take every now and again, do little to help their situation.

Colle_delle_Finestre

“the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.” To quote Thucydides.

By the 10k mark, the climb will have brought the the riders to breaking point. Climbs of over 9% generally tend to come to an end by this point.

That’s when the Finestre comes in for the kill.

It takes away from the riders the asphalt. The road becomes a glorified goat track. True to its nature, the mountain maintains the steady high grades which define it. We saw what unpaved road did to Nieve at Gardeccia. That was 150m and barely uphill. Try 8000m at 9%

19.jpg

On the gravel, the brutal turns become even more challenging, especially with 12% sections and nothing remotely flat in sight.
What will be in sight will be the signs telling the riders how far it is to the top. Unfortunately for them, after 14km of a 9% climb, they are not going to believe the signs. This is one of those very rare stretches of road in cycling, where every 2km can take 10 minutes to complete.

The good news for the riders is that at some point they will reach the top. But with a climb of this length and of this gradient after this many weeks of cycling, there is no way of knowing how long it will take.

Nevertheless, finally after 215k of racing and 20km of insane climbing, some time during the afternoon of May 28th 2011 the lead riders will fight it out for the prestigious kom title at the top of the Finestre.

That is when they will look down into the Olympic Valley.

Merely looking at the profile the Finestre descent might not seem all that great. They drop after all only about a 3rd of the altitude which they gained on the way up.

But unlike ascents, descents don’t rely solely on grades for difficulty. The Colle delle Finestre is 10km long, long enough to make a difference and like the other side, it is very technical. The roads are also very narrow, and watching the cameras follow the riders through the twist and turns is a thing of beauty.

colle15.jpg

While on the topic, it should be mentioned that the last 30km of this stage are among the most beautiful in this Giro. From the cameras covering the upper roads of the Finestre several dolomite giants can be seen in their entirety, snow caps and all.

The same goes for the descent, from which the riders will be able to see very clearly their final destination. In fairy tales, Valleys are often associated with hope and magic. As the riders motor their way into the Sestrieres valley, they will see why. There is a reason this was the region chosen for the 2006 winter Olympics.

colle_finestre_g.jpg

With its smooth asphalt clear as day among the grass, narrow roads, rapid speeds and most importantly with its large number of sharp twists and turns, it is difficult not to make the comparison with a rollercoaster.

Only with this rollercoaster, those afraid, no matter how well they hide it, will pay dearly with valuable gc minutes.

No secrets are kept from this mountain.

And as we have come to expect from Zomegnan’s major mountain stage profiles, no flat is allowed between climbs. The final ascent of the Giro begins immediately. The legendary Sestrieres celebrating 100 years since its first inclusion.

As a climb, the Sestrieres is actually quite weak. 5.2% average for 9km and no section harder than 7% wouldn’t usually do much damage. But the damage will by this stage already have been done. Sestrieres doesn’t need to be difficult. By simply being a climb it fulfils a role. It comes as a curtain, to 3 weeks of brutal racing , to several brutal mountain stages, to 230km in the saddle.

The Finestre will sort out the peloton, the Sestrieres just offers a final obstacle.

Completing it will not be an easy task. If stage 15 was filled with body punches, the Colle delle Finestre is one big knockout blow from Mike Tyson.

1304518663204-1ke76g4l9brll-500-90-500-70.jpg

Coming into the climb from the descent will help things out, especially since the first 2km are an easy 4.4 and 2.8% but with the physical state the riders will be in by that time, the 9km will take its toll.

As the climb hits 2km of 5% followed by a kilometre of 7%, mental state will come into play. They will know that the Giro is almost over, they will almost be able to touch the end, the tt the next day will be easier, but yet they have to keep plugging away. In a cruel twist, some might even finish outside of the time limit, only 26km away from being able to say they completed the most difficult grand tour.

But all eyes will be on the winner, because this is not a stage which rewards pure determination and grit. This stage can only go to someone with incredible climbing ability to boot. Riders can talk all they want about being the second best climber in the world.

This is the stage to prove it.

They say a race is made by the riders. At first glance Alberto Contador lies 5 minutes ahead of his nearest rival, and has shown repeatedly that he can put time in whenever and wherever he feels like. While the battle for the stage win will be interesting, the GC seems destined to go for a second time to the Madrilleno.

But this does not tell the full story. At some time in August the Court of Arbitration for Sport will meet to decide whether Alberto Contador should not have even been allowed to participate. It is likely that his win will be stripped and the runner up will emerge as the winner of the 2011 Giro d italia.

It is on this August GC that all eyes are turned and it will be here, on the slopes of the finestre and on the finish in Sestrieres that the 2011 Giro will be decided.

The 2 men fighting it out for this honour had a similar battle for the lower podium step last year. Nibali came out the victor then but this year Michelle Scarponi lies 48 seconds ahead of the Vuelta champion.

Nibali, seen by many as a successor to Il Falco will be no doubt eyeing the scene of Salvodelis most famous triumph. You don’t need to have the brightest DS in the business (and Nibali definitely does not) to figure out that Il Squalos best option is to try to hang on to the descent and then run riot.

The twists and turns of the Finestre descent might as well be spelling out the words “Vincenzo Nibali”

His problem is that there is 20km of major climbing before hand, and 9k of climbing after. He waned on stage 15 when Scarponi blossomed. The 33 year old Lampre rider is considered the better climber, and outclimbed the Sicilian in both the 2010 Giro and in the mountain stages so far. His tactic is more difficult to sport. He could try to attack on the climb to stop Nibali getting an advantage on the descent or he might let a Nibali attack go and hope to take back that time on the final climb.

With a 48 second advantage, Scarponi is in the better position.

But the advantages are not all with Scarponi. On the steeper mountains Nibali has been better. Surprising even. He beat Scarponi on Etna and on Monte Zoncolan. Moreover with the tt to come Scarponi can not let Nibali eat in too much into his lead.

What is for certain is that the descent makes things potentialy very interesting.

But there may be one other to challenge for the podium.

As the Finestre has only ever been used once, one always thinks back to its 2005 debut. Il Falco was just about the winner. Gibo the loser. But the stage went a young Venezuelan.

Rujano.jpg

Lurking in the shadows, still with a chance at that 2nd gc spot, lies Jose Rujano.

Unfortunately for Rujano, he lies over 4 minutes down on the podium. From that distance its unlikely that Nibali can even see him .

But Jose is all about climbing. On 2 mtf’s in this years Giro he has taken major time from his competitors. He needs more. 4 minutes is a big ask but this is the scene of his greates triumph. Its his type of climb, its where he announced himself to the world.

He can not be written off.

The balance is delicately poised. Scarponi will want to hang on, go hard on Sestrieres if need be. Nibali will want to attack on the descent. Both need to keep an eye on Rujano.

But with the colle delle finestre to tackle first, the best laid plans of mice and men will oft go awry.

History will be made.

Another excellent intro. I'm interested to see if Contador's gonna go for the jugular, or just sit back and relax.

hitch, another epic job with the stage intro. made me 100% sadder that i'll be missing the stage because of being at a wedding. should be a legendary stage, hoping team gadret can stay with ac and mr rujano up the climb and make his way to the podium (until he loses the spot in the final tt :D)

I totally got into the preview until it got to this bit:

But this does not tell the full story. At some time in August the Court of Arbitration for Sport will meet to decide whether Alberto Contador should not have even been allowed to participate. It is likely that his win will be stripped and the runner up will emerge as the winner of the 2011 Giro d italia.

For one thing, the news stories all say either mid-July or September because August is vacation time in Europe. The cities heat up, everyone heads to some beach, and the chances of getting all the lawyers, witnesses, arbitrators, etc. all in one place aren't very likely. Maybe they'll prove the articles wrong when they get together next week to pick a date. But Contador fans have had a lot to enjoy about the Giro, with three more stages to come.

Maybe a mod should put a warning in the title here that Contador fans might be offended, and that in a non-Clinic thread someone has tried and convicted him. There was obviously a lot of effort and some nice writing in the intro. Why trash it for some people who actually like the guy who has dominated the event?

Hitch, you ought to be a live commentator. I wish Eurosport would call you. It's cycling poetry you are giving us, you remind me of a young Jørgen Leth.

Wrt the stage: Does anybody know about the flat part in the beginning - are there any chances of the peloton breaking in crosswind?

Wim Van Huffel, Daniel Atienza and Mauricio Ardila to jump out of the bushes on top of the Finestre they've been hiding in for six years and to bring Nibali back to the Contador group. L'histoire se répète.

No no, I just thought that this would be a way to gain some minutes from Contador, since his team might be somewhat tired from defending the jersey for many days. I am a bit worried that Saxobank might not be able to protect him on the flat part, and other teams could try to take advantage of this. They might cooperate, since they all have an interest in it - or is it unrealistic?

Yes it is. They can't get back 5 minutes on Contador. Even more if we consider he will beat them in the last ITT. The others will race for 2nd place.

Then only the CAS can threaten Contadors victory ;)

But this is the last real day excluding Contadorrrr so I think they can hold it together each will have km - km to do their job then relax.
