Stage 12: Imola – Vicenza (Monte Berico) 190 kms

Start time: 12:35, May 21st

Analysis:
If in the previous stage the best part was the first half, here we have the opposite. Starting from Imola, the peloton goes north for 130 completely flat kms. The last 60, however, make up for an excellent Ardennes-like stage. The first "cote" is the GPM4 Castelnuovo (5.4 kms at 5%), which will serve as a nice warm up. After a very irregular descent and 15 kms of flat terrain, the pack will tackle the GPM3 Crosara (3.7 kms at 9.1%), already climbed in the 2013 stage finishing in Vicenza, but from a different side. This one is a very tough wall, whose average gradient is lowered by the last kilometer, which is little more than false flat. Basically its first 2 kms or so have a 12.7% average, with a full km above 14%! The descent is the same of 2013, but as soon as the riders hit the bottom, they take a detour that after 5 flat kms brings them to another climb, the uncategorized climb to Perarolo (2.8 km at 7%). After another irregular descent, 7 kms of flat entering the town of Vicenza, where the riders will face an uphill sprint. The road to the sanctuary of Monte Berico (GPM4, 1.1 km at 7.1%) is not very difficult at first, with 500m at 5.6%, but the last 500m are at 10.6%.

Expectations:
As I said, the route resembles a bit the Ardennes, in particular the LBL. At this point of the race all the one-day race specialists should be still in the race, so I expect them to go for it. There's a potential to see a great stage, that will probably have no effect for the GC, besides crazy attacks on Crosara

astana are so strong.. they should try to destroy the peloton here. Uphill sprint would be disappointing.

The only problem with that plan is that Aru isn't very strong. Anyway, Carlos will win this stage. Consecutive Zakarin and Betancur victories would be a dream come true.

well they also have Landa and Cataldo.. Aru is never going to beat Berto 1vs1 so they've got to try doing something.

Ulissi vs Gilbert vs Betancur?

That would be normal for an uphill sprint like this......

Actually, potentially Betancur is probably the best uphill sprinter in this Giro (barring 2011 Gilbert, but hey, 2011 Gilbert isn't in this peloton). But Betanur has a habit of not realizing his potential as we all know. :p

1. Ulissi
2. Betancur
3. Battaglin (just because he's so classy).

Gilbert no threat here. Hasn't convinced me this Giro.

What about Slagter? Personally I predict he will be dropped before he reaches that final hill.
If there were no climbs before he might do it, but so far this year he's been anonymous regarding his Muur skills.

Geschke to get in the break. Beñat and Bananito will probably not want another long day in the break unless a large group goes, and I can't imagine this is a stage that will yield a 20-25 man escape. And if they do have to go out in it, they'll have to go some to recharge ahead of the Madonna di Campiglio stage.

Beñat and Bananito can still give it a go if we consider that the following day would be almost a rest day for them. And maybe the TT as well.

someone in the break for the win. i bet that the lead will go upto 10+ min, unless someone with a smaller gap is part of the break.

i bet reduction of peloton to 40 riders after the second cat 3 "hill".
the uncategorized climb is actually tough enough to make a small selection. it's also just 13 km from finish.

Ulissi ftw. betancur will try to get some more mountain points.
among GC riders, either all 4 will come together, or porte will be allowed to take a small lead (or drag AC with him), but aru gets dropped.

(unless i am proven wrong, i think aru peeked a bit too early)
