Toon Aerts: I only saw Alec when I started my sprint. So I imagine a lot of riders behind Visma didn’t see him attack out of those corners.

I see Magnier is whining about Movistar setting the fast pace on the climbs today. Sprinters are truly the most pathetic cyclists out there, they want a million opportunities and an armchair ride to the finish each time.

The GC might be a damp squib, but at least we haven't had a bunch of boring sprint stages, most days have been of some interest. There should never be more than 2/3 bunch sprints per GT.

During the commentary, Robbie McEwen was talking about how there used to be lots of sprints during the Cipo/Petacchi era. Well yes Robbie, but you were at the Giro most of the Petacchi era so had just as many chances to win. Petacchi was just better.

My cycling day dream is being a GC contender that attacks for the lulz on such stages just to kill the sprinters every time.

Ok, so Magnier allegedly whines about the pace and in the very next sentence you just extrapolate to "Sprinters are the most pathetic cyclists". Seems like a pretty dumb generalization but ok.

What exact comments did Magnier make?

reminds me of Walscheid saying that he never heard of Silva. Or Narvaez saying that he didn't know Leknessund
I don't like these kinds of racers, it's a sign of hubris and egocentricity to think you can just show up and win without paying any attention to your opponents, even if they are below your perceived level.

Thanks for the link.

He doesn't whine about a fast pace on the hills? He questions the Movistar tactics. He's wrong to question them but at no point does he whine about the pace, ask for an armchair ride or for a million opportunities.

On top of that Magnier actually competes in classics, races and wins stuff like Dwars Door het Hageland.

Lol the tactic are mega obvious he's just being slightly passive aggressive about whining.

And what exactly were Movistars tactics? To ride a fast tempo on the climbs to drop the pure sprinters to give Oular a better shot at winning. So that is exactly what Magnier is whining about.

Now, here's a question:
Would Magnier have made similar comments about Movistar's tactics if Aular had won?
Or even won the sprint behind Segaert?

He's not whining about their tactics, he's questioning them as they ended up with nothing (he's wrong to do so).

Even if he was whining about pace on a hill, which he wasn't, your generalization was still dumb and uncalled for, especially as you based it entirely on Magnier.

Probably, but it shouldn’t make it difficult for him to understand—seems silly of him to wonder out loud “I don’t know if they were doing it just for show or to win the stage.” But. I won’t hold it against him— almost two weeks of riding these guys are tired and would rather not be doing interviews anyway.

Questioning/whining, its the same thing in this case.

Can you imagine if riders questioned everytime a team got involved in chasing down a breakaway on a flat stage and their sprinter didn't win. This is the exact same line of thinking here by Magnier. Its silly.

My low opinion of sprinters is based on a lot more than Magnier. Sprinters get a lot more chances whilst doing a lot less work than any other type of one dimensional rider in the bunch, yet you have instances like Magnier today or Merlier whining about not getting a shot at a World title. It's pathetic.
