Giro d'Italia stage 6: Orvieto-Fiuggi, 216km

So we have an intermediate stage here ideally suited to the break. I'd prefer that 50 riders didn't pile in and scramble the GC for the rest of the race like last year, buit maybe that's ok with you. Unlikely, of course. Rabobank sort of have the responsibility, but maybe they can get a bit of assistance from the teams of the GC contenders, or an HTC team desperate to turn this into an unlikely sprint stage. My first thought was of Visconti, who lost time today, but in the end it'll probably be a bunch of people I don't know or couldn't possibly guess, because it's only just hard enough to keep a break from coming back and doesn't particularly favour someone who climbs well. So a big break and an allrounder/attacker from a weaker team for the win.

So unless there is a freakish break WITH a good-placed Rabobank rider, the stage will be contested in a sprint.

there are around 100 riders in the field which are more than 10 minutes back so they might have the chance to keep their jersey even if they take it easy tomorrow. But the first intermediate sprint might mix some things up.

i think because of the neutralised stage the sprinters will be eyeing this one a little bit more closely and will help Rabo keep the breaks in hand - that said i think it will come back to a sprint but some teams will fade badly towards the end - Petacchi has been climbing well recently and Garzelli looks up for it - Italian OAP's first and second then!
thanks

A stage for Russell Downing of Team Sky. Stages like this usually suit him where the course takes out the main sprinters.

That said, maybe a smaller break might survive. However, seen as though Rabobank have no major GC contenders I think they'll keep a break in check. The teams of the surviving sprinters then might join in to bring it back towards the end.

Tough one to read. If I was rabo, let a small break go, keep in check, but with the aim of letting them stay away, unless the sprinter teams drag it back. Mainly because the finish looks difficult enough to take out some of the main sprinters, leaving an opportunity for someone like le mevel to chance his arm in the last km. Only needs a top 3 and he gets the jersey.

Manic first hour or so with Rabobank chasing anyone down too far up on GC.

Finally get a decent looking break of riders 8-10+ minutes down on GC, they go to the finish and contest the stage.

Minor shake up behind, few seconds lost for a few guys, possibly a change in leadership.

Downing FTW.

Shame Stannard isnt racing, he loves these sort of dusty roads.

Slow sprint from a reduced bunch. Maybe Gatto? Duarte looked handy today but he'll be up against stiffer opposition. Wild card: Sascha Modolo

Im hoping for a big break to go away with riders +10minutes in the GC and they can fight it out for the stage, hopefully Philip Deignan is part of that breakaway.. :p

petachi prolly wants to have a go at this one with his brand new climbing legs

dunno if he can make it tho. . . . visconti trying to get into the breakaway?

unfortunately Visconti has some knee problem, i believe we have to wait a little for him.

Pinotti, Sivtsov & Le Mevel will all be hoping for pink. That might change HTC's approach.
Le Mevel is on the radar now, it will be difficult for him. I think Pineau is ripe (and hoping for a Le Mevel dash).

If this was Turkey Petacchi would hold on. But maybe the pace will be too much in the Giro.

We've hardly seen Ventoso so who knows how he is going. Visconti is obviously off the pace at the moment. Vicioso is probably the best chance of the V men.

A random from the bunch to win it.

Pinoti, Popo,Tiralongo even Lövkvist

I'm inclined to believe in a successful breakaway rather than a sprint, by considering the length & the short bumps combined together, simply aren't going to favor the sprinters at all.........Unless Petacchi proves me wrong:p

Picked Visconti for fantasy, but he seems out of form, so I hope Deignan gets it in the breakaway!

Where is the finish line? I have relatives there and if they go all the way up to the town sguare it's pretty small. My relative's bar is right there... Bar Martini

Shame you couldn't be there.

But I will go with majority and tip a breakaway to win. In the Procycling Magazine, Scarponi described this as a perfect Vino course.

Vino and breakaway, that's not playing together. :) If Vino is here at the Giro he is not winning stage 6 after a breakaway but a late attack.
