I am curious.

Not so long ago everyone loved that company.

then came android, a "stolen product".

there's no discussion here. even if someone has blinders they used java without oracle's consent and they violated lot's of patents. then, if you took the blinders off, you will see lot's of android skins and even some funcionalities that are a blatant ripoff of iOS.

they are associated of lots of OEMs that are guilty of copying|infringing patents.

there's no discussion here. All OEMs have to pay Microsoft a royalty, pretty much all of them have pendant accusations from Apple *it isn't settled because Apple does not want money, they also have processes against each other. Motorola was targeting all of them so they forced google to pay a huge premium per share. Samsung is the biggest joke around in this subject.

they are a huge patent troll, just like HTC.

this is also a fact. they bought patents from IBM just to process someone. they didn-t want to share the Norton patents with apple microsoft sony etc and they were ready to spend huge amounts of money to get them all by themselves *microsoft apple and others were able to stop it. they gave patents to HTC for them to sue apple, the same HTC that tried to buy S3 patents just for that purpose, in vain.

they have a monopoly and they are evil.

antitrust. they show all their services ahead of others. this is a crime. if you try to use a map program, google maps will be the first and for months the only one show at the top.
they are liars. android open? not on earth. they know what you do, they sell you to companies wich are their true clients, in order to sell ads. thanks to them we have ads everywhere.

like their former CEO said, theres a limit. a scary limit.. google is a step above it.

having said this, they also have good things.
android might be a crime but thanks to that I have a smartphone.
search became simple and efficient, even if we now have better alternatives.
maps is great, even if something better is closer...

what do you think about them?

There should be another option in your poll: too geeky

Too geeky? what do you mean by that?

their products are easy to use, i suppose. Android has lots of flaws like lack of software updates, and there is some geeky ways to get a little of those updates on your phone. But only a few geeks do it, so that's irrelevant. the rest just live with what they have since android only had and has its boom because of cheaper phones that people don't even use as a true smartphone. lot's of reports out there to prove it.

however their search engine, maps, gmail, chrome, etc are easy to use.

their lack of taste has nothing to do with it. they are a company made of engineers that only bother with functionality, that's true. But they can make things work easily, without geeky ways, even if then they become obsolete with time.

Besides Apple i don't see anyone that "gets it", so google has it's role, a very important one. Thanks to them Apple and Microsoft will benefit a lot in the long run, just like us.

Why post something on a discussion board if there's 'no discussion' to make...

What is your point?

The goal with this isn't to investigate if they "cheated" or not. Obviously they do it, there's no company as evil as them. But they have their good things, really good things, irrelevant things and bad things.

My goal is to see if people think that those bad thing are worthy or "good", like looking at the forest instead of looking at the trees.

I think that I was very clear about it.

They're innovators, and as such, get some bad press for ... like, innovating. They really kicked the search engine market up the a$$, and now everyone plays catch up. I always, always, always use Google to search. I use Chrome for browsing. This is on Apple Mac for ... well, lots of reasons.

Apple used research at Xerox to 'invent' Graphical User Interfaces, which Microsoft 'adopted'. So everyone uses other people's work to develop and enhance their products.

This is a public discussion so you should inform yourself first before saying nonsense.

let's start,

Apple used research at Xerox to invent GUI, paying them with 100000 shares and money for their help like it was supposed to. This is written and is considered evidence, so don't even try it.

Then microsoft stole it and became too big for the small and fragile apple (at the time) to take them down. Still they were obligated to pay and make god knows how many deals.

they (google) are innovators and they cheat, a lot. Chrome is the best browser for windows, but for mac? safari is perfect. you can't beat those gestures, reader view, feed reader, etc. Not to mention speed and stability, thanks to APPLE's webkit 2 engine. chrome still uses 1.

they deserve the search monopoly that they created but there are already better alternatives. duck duck go, for example.

maps is still the best, especially in iOS with Apple's skin.

and here ends google's innovation as far as the normal user is concerned.
they get bad press because they deserve it.

As far as the consumer is concerned, google is good because they provide alternatives, usually with lower quality but cheaper alternatives.

Android has 0 innovation, 0 class, it isn't free, it isn't open, but is good enough for 100euros smartphones. even if it is illegal. but, is it worth it?

I didn't say that Apple stole it. Just used it.

They stole it? What did they steal, exactly? The idea of GUIs? Or did they progress into GUIs, like others were doing? There's no evidence of Microsoft "stealing" anything.

Well, that's an opinion. My opinion is that Chrome does everything I, and many millions of others, need it to do. It is stable. I've never had a crash, and I've used it for years. I used to use Safari, but moved across to Chrome, and haven't been back.

Is it better? How is it better? I've just looked at a couple of sample searches and TBH, I find Google's results more relevant. So I shan't be moving over, even if it is a "better alternative".

Worth it? How would you value something like an OS? We have both iPhone and Android here. Both seem to work perfectly well. The Android HTC was a huge amount cheaper than the iPhone, so yes, it's worth it.

iphone isn't an OS, android is.
Android has lots of weel known flaws. there are lot's of phones cheaper than the iphone but their quality is also lower.
what i wanted to say is that you can put android in a 100euros smartphone and that is android's advantage. however using android is wrong. they illegaly violate dozens of patents (which in this modern era means being sued) and they illigaly used java.

duck duck go has no ads, unlike all google's products and uses more than one search engine (google, bing, etc) filtrating them and providing more relavant results.

almost any browser does everything. but safari for mac is much more advanced and has many more features. it is also faster (if you use mac os). but if for some reason you prefer chrome, you are doing the right thing using it. no one can deny that it is a great browser.

what did microsoft steal? the whole idea. they simply became too big to fall. microsoft didn't innovate nothing.. they used it. There's no difference between windows 7 and XP, besides color and space, just like the differences between xp and the other microsoft OSes dont explain the price demanded for better looks. Microsoft stopped.

yes, apple had the right to use it in order to evolve it and invent something new, like they did.

if my post looked agressive I apologise.

@c&c

Don't really want to get into the whole Google sucks but does great things conversation, because I'm pretty sure these big corporations are all pretty much the same when it comes to stealing and making big bucks.

Just want to say this: Safari isn't the best web browser. Not for any platform. It actually sucks mega balls.

Thank you.

Well, if that is your opinion so be it. what do you want me to say? For me enzo is also a ****ty car. for you maybe it is awesome.
I see Safari as an amazing thing, but for windows it is really slow, i know. But i use a mac and i don't see a browser so modern and amazing out there. it has lots of usefull features and it is the fastest in the internetzzzzzzzz.

about the rest, no. not all big corporations are the same. not at all. but i don't know anyone that made it to the top while being an angel.

If you study them, you will see how evil and scary google really is.

Upon reflection, I'd be a lot more receptive to your comments if it didn't feel so much like all your comments end with an unspoken, "... unlike Apple".

Certainly there are questions around Google and what its direction is but they are far from alone in that. As such, as soon as comparative language is used, the argument is lost.

To hear the Apple faithful paint Google and microsoft with black hats and themselves in white makes me despair for the future

It is a bit strange to start a thread, with "what do you think?" in the title, and then shout down anyone who might disagree with the OP.

I choose Apple for my own reasons. But I support a lot of people who use PC, and I love a lot of what Google do. I have PC too, for those occasions when I can't get specific software for Apple.

I find the whole Google are theives argument a bit silly really. For instance, who said this?:

"...good artists copy, great artists steal" and "we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas"

Steve Jobs when inteviewed in 1996.

Major manufacturers in all fields copy off each other. Thats how leaps are made in technological development. Why isnt there just 1 car manufacturer? Why not just one LCD flatscreen brand?

The issue with google isn't copying other companies. The issue with google is the same as with Facebook - a small number of people holding a massive amount of personal data of other people and promising not to use it for evil. Even if they ARE good, what happens if they are hacked?

The whole industry is about copying bits from successful designers, how else do products move forward? If it's patent violation, if it's stealing... call it that, but everyone does it. I'd much prefer to live in this world than the zero competition alternative.

I think Churchill said something like, If you find a career doing something you love then its not work - paraphrasing badly, sorry.

Things like the 20% of time spent on your own projects is something that many of my co-workers would die to have.
