Actually MS is riding exceptionally well, yet I don't believe they have got full value from their race results - They've given some of their riders an interesting calendar - Haig two race days so far, Verona three race days so far, Albasini has hardly ridden, Power did the Herald Sun Tour and was a last minute replacement for Strade Bianche and for Catalunya, first year pro L.Hamilton has been treated with kid gloves, while Howson hasn;t ridden since Australia.

All I know is the Giro and the Vuelta team will be built around climbers and the TDF around Ewan.

Power a last minute replacement? Jeez, he rode as if he had targeted it. Great to finally see a bit of his talent...
It’s easy to forget, but Power had an even better U23 palmares than Haig when he was a full year younger - and not by a small amount either. At full health he’s a serious talent, better than Haig and Howson.

I know, but many a young talent has been curtailed by injury or some other thing - so it really was great to see him ride so well in Strade. First time he's really shown his class at WT level. I assumed SD was a target for him, and that maybe he had a bit of a license to do something.....but if he was subbed in, that logic doesn't fly. Makes his result all the more impressive ~

Power was a last minute replacement for Juul-Jensen who couldn't get to PN the nice day - Power has looked good in the first three stages of Catalunya, though I'd have preferred him to ride Coppi Bartali - It's been pleasing to see all the MS riders in the firing line at the end of stages in Catalunya.

Injury Update: Adam Yates
Thu 22 Mar 2018
Scans following Adam Yates' heavy crash in the final kilimeter of stage three at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya have revealed the 25-year-old has sustained a fractured pelvis.

After preliminary scans yesterday evening, Yates had a subsequent consultation with an Orthopedic Specialist today in Girona which confirmed the fracture was stable.

Given the nature of the injury Mitchelton-SCOTT head doctor Robbart van Linschoten remains optomistic.

"Adam has a fracture of his pelvis as a result of his crash but the fracture is stable and won't require surgery," Dr. van Linschoten said.

"He will take 10 days of complete rest before we conduct another x-ray to confirm the healing process. At this point, pending results and pain levels, Adam can begin to ride again on the home trainer."

I may be wrong but the most recent world tour rankings for teams sees Mitchelton Scott in 3rd place and it seems that the points are calculated as of May 7th. This last week at the Giro has been excellent for the team and should see some great improvements, especially from Yates and Chavez (who is on just 12 points for 2018). Jack Haig may not pick up many points, if any, but he has been riding well all season and has been super impressive at the Giro. The team shows a lot of similarities to the 2016 Vuelta team and look to have some great opportunities in this Giro. Not sure how Yates and Chavez can do in the ITT against the big guns, hopefully they can limit the damage and inflict their own pain in the mountains next weekend.

One of the really great things about watching Haig race is that he buries himself and then keeps on racing once he is dropped. He doesn't drop huge amounts of time and that shows a lot of fighting spirit. He seems hardy as well, always upbeat as you say and loves aggressive racing.

Ewan opened up MS well in California, it will be interesting to see how Adam Yates goes in Stage 2. You would think he is just going to use it for training given the accident he had. It might say a bit about how badly he was injured and how is recuperation is going. Plenty of rough stuff happening in that TOC sprint, Mezgec seemed to get cut right off his line.

MS must ensure Haig rides for GC at a GT in 2019 because if he continues this vein of form he will get good offers - Will add that Haig should be team leader at the World's this year and should be team leader at the next LBL - I rate him at the same level as Soler.

Roster for 2019 will be interesting - Yates x 2, Ewan, Durbridge, Howson, Verona, Kreuziger, Power, and Kluge out of contract - Tuft and Hayman to retire while Albasini may not continue - Supposedly a new sponsor is coming on board and there will be extra dollars in the budget - Supposedly MS wants to retain Yates x 2 and Ewan - I doubt this can work but we will wait and see - I believe Verona has offers and the team must be happier with Kreuziger who seems to enjoy the team - Durbridge should be offered another contract, though unsure about Howson, while Power should get another year as he is showing signs of improvement - Bewley only has a one year contract but expect him to be offered another contract

So effectively you could have out

Tuft
Hayman
Albasini
Yates/Ewan
Howson
Kluge
Verona ?

In

Stannard

Think MS needs another sprinter at the level of a Walschied/Bauhaus, probably 2 more grunt riders and another climber - Think MS should make a big play for Ben O'Connor and even consider James Whelan who is new to the sport, but won the under 23 Flanders Field in his first ever race in Europe.

Simon Yates and Howson both get along very well with Chaves and Bewley, so I doubt anyone wants to split up that dynamic. Adam Yates seems at home as well. The big thing is $$$, or more to the point, how much other teams are willing to throw at Haig and Ewan. I can’t see Durbridge leaving in a hurry, Verona is the only likely exit not due to retirement IMO.

Tuft, Hayman and possibly Albasini will be big losses for the team when they retire. The team culture and camaraderie has been guided over the years by good strong leaders and I am not sure if they have a natural leader ready to step up and replace Hayman. The possibles would be Meyer, Albasini if he stays on or possibly someone like Jack Bauer. Not sure if any of the forum contributors know any of these guys well enough to nominate someone capable of taking the "Captain" role. Not sure what the team has in mind for Hepburn but maybe he will join with Bewley to take on the Tuft, strongman role. He has been doing a bit of that role anyway but I wasn't sure if they were wanting him to become a time trial/prologue specialist.

Have been keen to get Rory Sutherland into the team but that's unlikely to happen - It can be hard to find these type of riders.

My query with Howson is he missed two months of the season with and is still struggling - He's not riding Tour of the Fjiords or TOC or the Hammer Series - He was supposed to be the support rider for A.Yates at the TDF but that's unlikely - I'll also add that with better climbers in the team it could be Howson at risk - And it appears unlikely Durbridge will ride the TDF - Anyway it's fantastic that Hepburn is rewarded with a ride in the TDF.

What's the Yates' stance on riding against each other?
In other words; could the team lose one, but not the other?

I asked the same question on another forum - Think at some stage of their careers they will ride for different teams
- Though would love to see the brothers chasing each up over mountains.

Would also make life for cycling commentators world wide significantly easier.
Unless they mix up who rides where...

I think there is an argument for saying that the Schleck brothers derailed their careers by riding together. Of course they would never admit that but their tactics were all over the place often affected by being unwilling to ride away from each other. If there were tandem races well it might have worked. There used to be tandem races on the track years ago which were pretty weird to watch !

I think there is a difference between riding against each other (on different teams) and one riding for the other (on the same team)
The Schleck brothers' main issue seemed to be that they were more concerned about getting on the podium together, than letting one sacrifice himself in order to help the other win.

Yes the sacrifice part was a tough one for them..........

Yeah but Andy was still young. His career ended just about the time he was going to enter his peak with that crash. We’ll never know what would’ve happened had he not been injured.

Museeuw recovered from a much serious injury and came back winning Roubaix. Armstrong recovered from cancer, etc
Andy took a credible excuse to quit pro cycling, nothing bad if you ask me

Trentin will return from his broken vertebra at Adriatica Ionica.
He will likely miss national championship and the Tour but if he has recovered well he could be in good shape for Poland and Eneco or, at least, for the Vuelta.

Trentin is definitely riding the Vuelta - He could snag a one or two stages.
