Why???? They announce them when they want to. They'll have to announce quite a few names this month due to UCI regulations but otherwise there is no real pressure.

I think they're thinking that GreenEdge, because they haven't announced sponsors yet, just guarantees (which is exactly what Pegasus did), seem like they may be in a similar boat - they need to have the WT position to guarantee the sponsors, and they need the sponsors' money to guarantee the riders that will give them the points to go WT.

Therefore they need to announce some names with points soon as a statement of intent to tell sponsors they are serious about this (and also entice other big names to ride, as if they only announce some half decent domestiques and over-the-hill Aussies they may find it hard to attract riders of satisfactory status to get that WT position), plus sponsors may be forthcoming with more money if the team looks like being good.

This is all predicated on an assumption of the situation, because of how close to their chests they've played the money card. All we know is that they say they have money and they've been linked to some good riders. Hence, it's just trust and good faith in the people involved (and the subsequent expectation that they won't foul it up as badly as White) that differentiates them from Pegasus at this time last year.

If the situation is all in hand, then they can take it at whatever pace they like, as you say.

The big difference is that they do not have the cycling establishment of Australia hoping that they will fail so the insiders can get their own team off the ground.

Pegasus had no philanthropic backer. Chris White is not a billionaire, he was relying on a sponsor. That sponsor, who was supposedly Mr. Mateschitz, got nervous at the start of October and pulled his support.

The Ryan family is backing Green Edge to tune of 10-20 million a year for three years, this has been confirmed since January. I cannot envisage a scenario where Ryan withdraws from this arrangement. It would dent his reputation, and it doesn't make sense, when this is his endgame - it's not just the direct financial commitment to the team, but millions of dollars over decades of supporting cycling.

Green Edge have stated that they are not interested in securing a title sponsor just yet [Edit: Although a quote from Ryan's comments yesterdays seem to dispute this?], that the idea is to establish the team first and then start looking for sponsors for real some time in the next couple of years. Now I'm sure if someone knocked on their door with a good offer tomorrow they may accept it, but it is not crucial to the medium-term future of the team.

But, there is still maybe a problem of international signings being worried about an Australian start-up after last year's debacle. None of the Australians would be concerned, given the people who are involved, they would be completely comfortable with this getting off the ground. Maybe the internationals will want the supposed risk factored into their wages.

Yeah agree with what Ferminal said. Gillett (the son) was working the financial and sponsorship angle I think of Pegasus and then when Red Bull pulled out so did Gillett and CW was left high and dry.

Whereas this situation it seems the bank guarantees are already in place, even before the process can begin and certainly Ryan has committed to ensuring the team has the $10mill budget for 3 years. Not sure if that's regardless of them getting ProTour or ProConti status though. Wasn't there an article earlier on stating that they have planned for if they can't get ProTour and that they will settle for ProConti? Anyway, all this talk now seems to indicate confidence with the UCI and its not like they haven't worn out that bed...

The "guarantees" with participating in the Grand Tours, I believe, is just hyperbolic ramblings to a non-cyclist news source for non-cyclist sports fans and being read into too much by cycling media. There's no way at the moment they can confirm a participation and unless the UCI has major clout with ASO/RCS I don't think its even feasible.

You all have to trust in Jerry Jayco. He is guaranteed to make hundreds of millions of $$ in the next 30 years due to the great product that he develops and sells and he is not a tight **** when it comes to giving some of it away. He has been Cyclings Savior, Jayco has been the only non government cash in Cycling in Australia for years.

He is an old fashioned Gentleman. His word is his bond. Its all going to happen.

Great to see Stewie signed. Id say 2 years as El Capitano then straight into a managers role.

A great time to be alive.

I hope that you're right that it's hyperbole and miss-reporting by media. I've worked in the always-optimistic, positive thinking, environment of sales culture to imagine it like that. The team itself should have PR correcting wrong stories once their in the cycling press though.

Yeah of course, considering the fall-out and denials by O'Grady and McEwen, Ryan probably shouldn't be the one to talk to the media or even place an announcement like this (which I think it was - 12am on the dot?). Certainly don't expect the article to be the same if it was for a cycling media outlet than a wider Australian newspaper. They don't have a CEO now with McKay quitting so maybe he thinks he needs to step in during the interim? Hopefully the other members of the team rein him in a bit, so to speak.

Firstly, where has it been reported that O'Grady is ACTUALLY coming to GreenEdge?

Overall I do agree with your post. Ryan is in it for the long haul. The amount he has invested and continues to invest means that pretty much no matter what there will be a team. I have no doubt in my mind that an Aussie team will be in the World Tour next year. The guys they have working in the team are very good at their jobs and don't make false promises!

Can't wait for them to start announcing the team.

Until I see stuff on CyclingNews, the official GreenEDGE twitter, website or from the rider themselves I don't consider anything to be an announcement.

I wonder which riders from Australian Continental ranks will gravitate to GE??? Maybe riders from Drapac and Genesys???

Genesys are the big boys in a very small pond at the moment, they've got a lot of strong riders but they profit from being the only full-time and conti team on the NRS. Drapac doesn't actually ride it, not sure why but they have a focus on producing talent eg Norris getting picked up by HTC as a staigiare. Semple/Lapthorne are decent riders from Drapac, from Genesys Earle, Haas and Shaw are good, others here may be better judges though.

Yeah. 3 minute video voiceover and that's it! Money well spent.

Kroon rumour popping up again:

http://www.sportdome.nl/Nieuws/36361--Kroon-vertrekt-naar-GreenEdge-.html

Mentioned Langeveld, Weening and Mouris again too.

EDIT: And according to Benson (and now the exploding twitterverse), Daniel Teklehaimanot is the first confirmed rider for GreenEdge. :D

Actually pleased about that signing.

another name 'm surpised hasn't been linked is adam hansen, can't see him getting a gig where he is next year.

Well, it's hard to tell from his palmares since most races he has won have been in Africa but he did finish 6th in Tour de l'Avenir so he can certainly defend himself in climbs. He's perhaps not a climber per se but he seems to handle more than just the flats. And he's also not terrible at ITTs it seems, no specialist by any means but also not terrible like Rodrigues for example.
