If the bikes are 7.7 kg (17 lb), throwing a sponsor under the bus isn't the way to get them lighter.

Really though, if he is claiming it to be Look bikes that are too heavy, we need to know the frame weight to compare to other pro frame weights.

EDIT: Look claims a small frame: 890g, 1315g frame+fork, 7kg (15.5 lb) asphalt ready bike on their website.

EDIT 2: Tadej's Colnogo weighs 798g, 1173 frame+fork, 7.25kg (16 lb) complete bike (as reviewed by road.cc with Dura Ace wheels not the Envie wheels that UAE uses...).

Perhaps it is fueled by the fact that he is rumored to be leaving Confidis and is "so done with the team". I mean, it is a team of vampires isn't it?

Maybe, but why not rip the team instead of the sponsors? FDJ is likely his last stop anyway since he is 31 or 32 so offending sponsors likely won't matter to him. Cav's Wilier is 7.6 kg so Martin might not get a lighter bike with the move.

He was over 40 minutes down too so maybe its not all about the bike.

Martin's probably just annoyed that his sneaky breakaway tactics to snag that coveted 10th place in a GT have been found out...

I‘m surprised if the Look bike is „so“ heavy. Look is a perfect manufacturer, perfect and innovative. And their frames „look“ greatly: wonderful design.

Guillaume to FdJ would be cool. The new Pinot.

Hope he stays around for another 15 years. Sadly Bardet retires. But Gregoire and Lenny Martinez are there already.

I wonder why the guys still retire at 33 to 38. When Horner won the Vuelta, I thought it could become normal that they perform big aged 40 to 47.

Off topic, hats off to Rebellin, Paco Mancebo, Oscar Sevilla. You should not retire before age 50 to 55 from pro scene. I hope Froome rides until 55 to 60. I think Froome still could win the Tour in future, maybe at 40 or 45…
 
Bikes are ruined. All this aero and disk brake business has ruined cycling. Teddy on a 7+ kg bike is a travesty.

Bring back the days when people were calling for the lowering of the UCI limit I say! My bike is 6.3kg and I can get it below 6 easy if I was willing to spend some money.

But in all seriousness they are going faster then ever on these bikes so they are doing something right. I do love me some weight weenie behaviour though! :sweatsmile:

Not sure when you live, but the British hill climb scene is the place, season runs September/October.
Sub 6kg bikes are regular, British title two years ago was won on a 5.39 bike fully road legal.

Road legal maybe but race legal? The UCI limit is 6.8Kg. So the British hill climb rules do not adopt UCI rules?

As for Guillaume Martin's complaint, I agree with him. To fatty amateurs 1kg is nothing. But to pros hoping to be competitive in the mountains 1kg (2.2lbs) is significant.

The industry has thankfully got its act together to make bikes light again after we saw Peter Sagan's 8kg disc equipped monstrosity - but at a cost.

Bikes are ruined. All this aero and disk brake business has ruined cycling. Teddy on a 7+ kg bike is a travesty.

Discs and aero is why the cost of top end bikes has exploded in the last decade. In Australia I could buy one of the bikes ridden by the pro teams for about $A10k in 2016 - rim brakes and non aero frame - like what Bardet was riding then. Now a bike spec ridden by the pros will set me back at least $A17k. That isn't just normal inflation.

Since 2016 discs and aero added weight - like Sagan's bike. To get back down to the 6.8Kg UCI limit with discs and aero costs a lot of R&D, carbon instead of alloy bars, titanium instead of steel axles and bolts etc. We all pay for that. So congratulations all you early adopters of new stuff pushed by the industry, I am paying more for my bike thanks to you.

In the UK, Timetrialling and so Hillclimbing too is typically run under RTTC not UCI rules. This all kind of got born out of an era in UK where racing bikes was made illegal by Queen Victoria iirc and so to race a bike involved secret codes to find courses and set off at timed intervals so to the road police it just looked like one guy on a bicycle riding fast and so not illegal. Basically TT split from Road forever more. Is largely why UK has no Grand Tour too, because while GT racing exploded in Europe, in UK it was made illegal.

I live in Australia, and am envious we don't have a hill climb scene like you do, looks like a lot of fun.

Right now though I'm carrying about the weight of an extra hill climb bike on my waist so....
