Man on motorcycle hits cyclist who is then run over by the man's girlfriend in a car. Neither have valid driver's licences. Earlier in the month the man was released from being jailed for DWI. The girlfriend was drunk at the time of the accident, 7:30 A.M.

Forfeit the car of the drunk driver. Screw the innocent owner (unless the innocent owner can prove theft)--the innocent owner should keep drunks out of the car.

Sad story all around. Shame that modern coursthip rituals for some of the overly young and clinically stupid involve an unfortunate elixir of horsepower and inebriation. Nobody wins when the two shall meet.

I just watched Mutiny on the Bounty (Laughton). Cat 'O Nine Tails and keel hauling were effective... for a while.

It is generally agreed that it is not the severity of punishment that deters crime, but the certainty of punishment.

And as a sad ancillary part of this story -- Merkel has two children, 4 and 6 years old, that she's already lost custody of.

So if you're keeping score, she has
- killed one person
- spent time in prison, which society paid for
- stole from innocent people
- had children and lost custody of them, which society will pay to raise; hopefully they will not repeat the cycle and turn out like their mother

What a complete drain. The story of the night before is amazing -- an all night party (why wasn't she home with her children?), driving from one party to the other. Meanwhile, the victim gets a good night sleep, gets up early to beat the heat and ride on the roads when they are lightly traveled to get some good honest training -- in other words, does everything right.
