Has anyone come close to wearing the leaders jersey in a GT from first day to finish?

Freddy Maertens in 1977 Vuelta maybe? Won the prologue, stage 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11a, 11b, 13, 16 & 19.

I guess he held the jersey all the way through.

Yep, he did, winning 13 of the 19 stages while he was at it.

It has been done a couple of times, Rominger in the 1994 Vuelta for sure.

Wow, I didn't know that, but I remember the people here being excited when he was racing the Tour as he was apparantly half Danish. (Pantani had a Danish girlfriend btw). Has it ever happened at the Tour de France?

Gianni Bugno, in the 1990 Giro.

Cool, I remember him well racing in his worlds winner jersey. The Danish commentator Jorgen Leth always commented that if he (Bugno) could he would trade his 2 worlds titles for 1 of Indurain's Tour wins in a heartbeat.

TdF: Ottavio Bottecchia in 1924, Nicolas Frantz in 1928 and Romain Maes in 1935. :)
*Maurice Garin in 1903, but there was no jersey back then. Thanks Lanark.

Giro: Costante Girardengo in 1919, Alfredo Binda in 1927, Eddy Merckx in 1973 and Gianni Bugno in 1990.

Vuelta: Julián Berrendero in 1942, Freddy Maertens in 1977 and Gianni Bugno in 1990.

That should be all?

Maurice Garin (1903) was the first person to lead the GC from start to end, but there was no yellow jersey back then. Technically, Frantz was the only one to wear the jersey the entire Tour, because he started the race in yellow because he was last year's winner as well. Although he lost 28 minutes in one stage because he broke his bike, he still retained the yellow jersey.

So 1935 was the last time someone did it at the Tour. To be honest I don't think we will see it again in that race, especially if the route keeps breaking away from the norm as it does this year with no prolouge at the beginning.

Nice info Lanark. Thanks for that.

youve got to remember as well for many years the tour followed the formula of short prologue and then a week of sprint stages with time bonuses. To hold yellow from start to finish during the tour you would need to be an awesome time trialler, as well as being able to finish in the top 3 or 4 on the flat ,and then climb the alps and pyranees. Nigh on impossible.

Strange that Indurain never managed to do it despite his TT strength.

Well, he did win the prologue in both 1992 and 1993 so he definately had the chance to do so. In 1992 he only held the yellow jersey on the first stage though as he lost it to Zülle if I remember correctly. In 1993 I think he held it for a few more days but I could be wrong.

Nah, Gilbert will win the first stage and he won't wear it till Paris, so this year it's impossible :D

I think Contador could have done it in 2009 if it wasn't for Cancellara.

Yes, until Lance made that break and took time from AC. It would have been world war 3 had Lance gotten in yellow.

Gilbert wont win the first stage , Hushovd will win it ;-)

Both riders have pointed out this stage and they prepare doing training togheter before the tour as far as I have read in norwegian papers. Hushovd have been qouted he will do a lot of training with Gilbert and that they both have pointed out some of the same stages they go for in this tour.

That 1994 Vuelta was incredible. Rominger won six stages, and Laurent Jalabert won a whopping 7.

1993 was the only Tour where Indurain was actually seriously challenged, and that by Rominger, who couldn't quite break Mig in the mountains, but came very close a few times. Sadly, in 1994 Rominger crashed early, and dropped out a few stages later. The most boring of Indurain's Tour wins.

If Contador somehow won the Giro/Tour/Vuelta he would be the first person to ever do so, and that would be a monumental achievement. But I don't know that he's even going to attempt such a thing, but if he were, this would be the year.

In 1995 Jalabert won the overall, points, and climbers jerseys. All three. This is a feat I don't think we're likely to see from anyone for many years.
