On the start line at Melbourne to Warrnambool all riders helmets will be checked to be sure that they have a Australian safety standards sticker inside.
Helmets purchased overseas will not be alowed!!!

Today the Victorian Government have anounced that helmets will be available to purchase from the new Bike hire stands throughout the City the cost of the helmet is $5 and if you dont need it you can recycle it for $3.

You are cought without a helmet the fine is $135.

So what happens if we buy a helmet for $5 remove the sticker with a hair dryer and put in in the $100 Giro you got from China on ebay.

If you still have the nerve take the helmet back and recycle it for $3.

Another Irish way of doing thing which it typical of UCI rules

There is no way to prove this is a violation of rules the helmets are allade in same place.

not sure what the UCI has to do with it - is this a UCI sanctioned event?

as for the paranoia, that'll be the liability folks going overdrive thanks the the lawyers...

as for your loophole, why not just nick the sticker from a helmet and save yourself the $5/$3 hassle?

storm in a teacup...

Melbourne to Warrnambool is the second oldest race in the world, and possibly the second longest one day race. Yes it runs to UCI rules.

Good way of getting a standards sticker too, thanks for the tip ;)

ps Australias helmet laws are crap.

My last trip I was warned by everybody that knows me that the cops would give me a ticket for riding around without a helmet. The Australian police/court system has done an effective job at making a rule and enforcing it. Racers that have stayed with me in CA and NY all are amazed at how few rules that the police enforce when it comes to bicyclists of all kinds. The US cycling fed used to grab your tires and make sure they were glued correctly, check for loose saddle, bars and stem and bar end plugs. Now at most races nobody cares if you have 4 spokes in your front wheel and no glue on your tires.

No its not Cycling Australia have a rule that all helmets must have the Australian Standards sticker in them. this is rubbish as you know standards in USA and Europe are as good if not better than OZ standards so in Australia we pay extra for our imported helmets because they have to be tested before sale.
Not true all they do is stick the lable inside they test one helmet every time there is a new model .
these cheap helmets made in China sell at $5 each and have passed a test or the Government could notb use them.
A new top of range helmet in Australia is around $400 in the bike shop yet you can but same for less than $100 on ebay new. who is the extre $300 going to.

Its worse than that.

every SIZE in a particular model needs to be independantly tested in Australia. So if a company decides its too expensive to pay for the testing for a size they won't sell much then you won't be able to buy the helmet here.

I have previously been told it cost $60,000 aussie to run the tests and therefore at one point you couldn't buy the largest version of the MET Stradivarious because they hadn't paid to test it.

that rule from CA will be due to their liability insurance, and a sad fact is that lawyers will have been involved both directly and indirectly in it's creation. Casualty insurance underwriters in Aus have quite a thing about any imported item meeting Australian Standards. How they meet those standards, and at what level, is not something they're too fussed about.
The bottom line is, that they really don't mean a great deal, and the ability to change the situation is virtually impossible [for us]...

and you trust "new" on ebay??

they are new.

NEW from China at 1/3 price so go buy a $5 helmet and use the lable and no one knows.

Nothing to stop me buying a $5 helmet and racing in it except it looks cheap and probably purple . but they wont alow me to buy a $100 Giro atmos from over seas.

At the world champs they were alowed to use the team issue helmet. its just a money spin but who gets the money are we paying someone $200 to stick lables on helmets.

Good luck trying to remove the labels and affixing it to the imported helmet. Out of curiosity where did you get you're original information from? Alot of events state they'll check helmets, rarely if ever seen it in practice.

hmmm... are you aware of the massive industry of fake items pouring out of China? and the huge "war" on such items throughout southeast Asia?
I'm not talking a few rip-off football shirts, dvds and louis vitton handbags, but all sorts of things including pharmaceuticals that have killed people. the quality of your $100 helmet may be the equivalent of puting an ice cream container on your head, despite "looking" like it's the real deal...

sure, the likes of giro and your LBS are ripping you off anyway (claiming shipping/etc...), but at least you know you're getting the genuine article.

To be clear though, you can get a Giro helmet from a UK online store for less than 40% of what we pay here in Australia. Its not just Asia and eBay that make us feel that we are being ripped off. Its the fact that we can clearly see what people in other countries pay for exactly the same item from the same manufacturer.

is that 40% before or after the postage costs?

So what happened?? Did all riders get their helmets checked? Or were they more concerned about hypothermia. Sounded like a hard day at the office!
