Hinault on Jalabert: "Bullsh*t". Truth or words from the Jurassic?

Bernard Hinault was and is a legend...and outspoken. His concern for the Tour is genuine but is it misguided? Is the exposure of an obviously tainted former legend part of a legitimate catharsis or "piling on" by the media?

Bernard piled on the french for being "lazy" before. "Lazy" and "unprofessional" are code words by older riders for doping. His stance on doping is and has been pretty obvious.

Oh, the Badger just wants to make sure his Tour is going to be run without the negative headlines which are pretty meaningless in reference to reality, mainly due to the raising of concerns of 15 years ago when current cycling is ignored. Current Cycling Doping that is. I'm sure if it was in relation to a current rider he'd of voiced a different opinion.

Hinault has never had a problem with doping, unless of course when he was asked to pee into a little container to be tested.

Five riders refused to submit to a doping control at the 1982 Critérium de Callac. All were fined and given a one-month suspension, including Hinault.

Hinault has been close to the sport forever and knew what the TdF winners were doing. He never threw Armstrong, Riis, Ullrich et al from the winners podium as they pi$$ed all over the TdF.

Different times Benotti.

Hinault worked a lot of years with doctor Bellocq, an advocate of hormone therapy, what actually meant help a rider survive a 4000 km bikeride and live to tell. When I am honest I agree with that idea. Bellocq and a lot of his fellow sports doctors at that time, like Peter Jansen for example, have said this on multiple occasions.

Technically it is doping, but, given the insanity of the sport I [sometimes] tend to see it as just surviving.

When other products are used, like Synacthen [cortisone], it is a completely other matter in my book, wheter Bellocq helped Thevenet with that I am not sure of.

So, Bernard took some amphetamines prior to a crit, not a biggy in my book. Pro - cycling in that era wasn't that lucrative and Hinault didnt want to look like a fool at those races I guess.

Maybe thats why he has always turned a blind eye when donkeys like Riis were smiling next to him on the ceremonie protocolaire, they knew the great Bernard also was a shooter, just a different kind.

Perhaps thats why LeMond is such a vocal anti - doping advocate, no one has something on him, he only should have done it back in 1992.

Agreed. I think that's why he gets such a bad wrap and continually gets bashed by some folks. He's clean, and people cant seem to find anything in his past to prove otherwise and that tears them up. My opinion of course.

I think so. Just the timing that upsets him. But the Rolland news and now Jalabert are not good news for the supposedly clean French who have not won for so long because they don't dope and others do. Of course only some of the French believe this. Hinault was right the first time. French riders were treated like rock stars for too long and did not have the attitude and work ethic others did. This has seemed to change in recent years but the French seem no closer to providing a Tour winner. Pinot is probably the great white hope for French cycling at the moment. Rolland does not convince me as a possible grand tour winner.

Always ask myself that question , and really lance is the only person to ever accuse him. As mentioned Hinault did what he had to do to keep going rather than improve. It wasn't a race to the bottom as such like it became in the 90s

Facts are important here.

Bellocq had among his clients Greg Lemond. If Bellocq is a red flag for Bernard, it would go for all involved.

So the evidence on Bernard doping is still no more than insinuations ;)

Yes, to the bold, facts are always important. Thats why it is important to point out Bellocq became Z's team doctor in 1991. All those hormone therapies didnt quite work for him would you say? Or, could it be LeMond never used Francois for hormone therapy? I dont know, we do know LeMond never skipped a test or ran away from one...

Bernard ran away from a doping control, that counts/counted as a positive test.
