Frankie and Chris are the two best commentators in the sport. The insight they give is so impressive.

Mandatory viewing for anyone who wants to know more about the sport

Do you think Horner can be hired by a network after his career as a rider (coming soon) is done? I think he would fun commentating a la Sherwen/Kelly, but it seems he's seen as a black sheep and not reliable, at least that's my perception.

I wouldn't call him the black sheep.

Horner's biggest problem is he tells it like it is. The details he gives are very good but many of the casual fans don't understand what he is saying. In the US the broadcast is tailored to be a stupid as possible. Hard for experts like Frankie and Chris to fit into that.

Online might be a better avenue

Chris is great, no? It really bothers me that he is not accorded more respect by the media. Yes, he is a "character," but that doesn't make him any less serious of a rider. I, too, hope that when he retires he can stay involved in the sport: Having him as a color commentator would be so cool.

Yeh, the lawyers don't like risk takers. Actually as much as Bob Roll is getting old, for those of us old enough to remember, he was entertaining in the event that he use to be upredictable.

Horner, I think would do fine. Like McEnroe is a very good tennis commentator, but was crazy on court.

Horner is not like McEnroe in that regard, but would bring some outspokeness to coverage wether you agree with it or not.

Jens on riding at the front, 5x5 rule

http://www.steephill.tv/players/720...board=tour-de-france&id=1721077630001&yr=2012

I thought those annoying guys only race in the intermediates.:D

I once had a guy with tyre tape to his saddle (black electric tape like we have here the states...it melts in the heat) during the Gila when it was in June. I kept screaming at him because he kept bumping me off wheel during the last stage. He would not relent. Finnally he took an illegal feed at the base of the Sapillo Springs climb coming right to left in front of me an forcing me almost to a stop. That's a steap climb at the bottom 12-15%. I was so mad, I attack and eventually formed the winning break from the break taking third on the day. I never saw that gnat of rider again.:)

We had had a lot of good guys to train with in those days, but some people never get it. Thanks Jens, for invoking the memory. I can still see that tyre hanging dangerous in front of my wheel.

Waiting on today's post. I am pretty sure Horner was just behind Farrar and just missed his hitting his head by locking it up briefly. We will see what he has to say hopefully.

Why in the world anyone off Radioshack is working for a "team leader" is beyond me. They clearly have no leader...when your talking about pacing guys up climbs and trying to limit the loses to under 5 minutes then you can forget about GC. Actually, this team has defied logic for so long now that it renders me speechless. It seems like Horner doesn't even really know who to pace for. One minute he's talking about Klodi and then references Frank, but all suck

Then look beyond yourself. I do believe, despite the clinic doubters, that the switch to climbing can go bad for some. I posted yesterday that I expected Klöden to have a bad day in the mountains. You will have noticed that Cancellara came up from behind, Klöden simply blew up as we would say. He made a mistake by trying to stay with the Sky train too long.

The term "on paper" means that he has a good time trial and climbing record. This does not make him the race favorite, but he still warrents some respect for the next couple of days. Too bad for Horner today, I think he would have been about a minute back. It look like a interview before the race instead of after.

I think Kloden and RS managment should face the music soon. Klodi is 37 years, sits 32nd 2:19 back on the first climbing stage. I'll admit that's it's early but I can't imagine giving him past monday if things don't turn around. Same should be said for the others because none of the others are impressive TTers. JMO
