How far can Cavendish go?

Cavendish is currently on 20 stage wins at Le Tour, with Merckx's record standing at 34.

In all Grand Tour's, Cavendish has 33 wins so far, Merckx's record is 64.

So, do you think Cavendish will get Eddie's Tour record?

Do you think he will get his overall Grand Tour record?

I was thinking Manghen...

But yeh, think Cav will beat Eddy's Tour record, maybe not overall though.

That record means nothing. Eddy won sprints, time trials, prologues, team time trials, mountain stages, etc

It's a hell of a lot more prestigious to win a stage on the Galibier or the Tourmalet than it is to win a flat stage.

The only thing saving this thread is the Doug avatar. :p

Yes and Yes to both questions.

He'll probably end up with 40 TDF wins, and about 80 total GT wins

I like most things cav and most things he gets praised for but i am very scared of the day Cav breaks that record and the british press ****s on our religion and tries to argue this makes him the best cyclist ever or something.

The sky's the limit (no pun intended). He might stop being productive in two years, but if he keeps winning longer than that, he might break pretty much any record there is for a sprinter.

If the rules were the same for everyone, he would be on his way home now. Getting pushed on a climb repeatedly is dirty play. So in a way, his number of victories would be a lot less had not he been treated differently.

Can you remind me who has been kicked off due to being pushed?

Cavendish hasn't. That's my point, you see.

So who has? That's his point, you see.

For the OP, he may find either record tough, now that HTC don't exist. He'd have probably won another 1 or 2 in this Giro, had he been with last year's HTC team, for example.

Yes, but it wasn't my point. My point is that no-one has been sent home for accepting/not stopping pushes. So, the rules are being applied the same to everyone.

Disgusting double standards, the way they don't punish Cav for something no one else is punished for either.

UCI clearly being paid protection money.

I would add that if another sprinter had been sent home for it and Cavendish hadn't, I'd be annoyed about it too, and I'd see it as a clear case of star power trumping fairness.

Whereas in practice, Cav gets an easy ride off the cycling authorities in the same way as Lewis Hamilton is the pet of the F1 stewards.

Every sprinter accepting pushes should be sent home, according to the book. But this thread happens to be about Cavendish, innit?

And why specifically do you highlight when Cav breaks this rule and no other rider?

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with what you said in the first place. Let me remind you.

You were suggesting that the rules are not applied evenly - that Cavendish had somehow received preferential treatment. However, since no-one has been sent home for this, they are all being treated evenly. This thread is indeed about Cavendish, but if you'll read your own post, you might realise that it was you who brought the other riders that I'm talking about into this.

+123 No disrespect to Cav, even like watching him sprint, but the above is very true. The numbers don't always paint the picture.

And yet you can say the same thing about Armstrong's 7 wins when his competition were going through various crises etc. Compare those wins to some of Eddy's wins where he had to battle it out with Ocana, a climber who himself was a born tour winner.

Yet at the end of the day Lance has the record and Eddy, Jacques, Bernaurd and co. fell short. With Cav though his wins may not be as big an accomplishment in terms of how he accomplished them at the end of the day he may have the highest tally and that will be an accomplishment which surpasses Eddy.

Are you sure about this? Clearly it isn't allowed for but is it (necessarily) punished with disqualification?
