With Afrank's great thread 'Tour in Pictures' I was suprised how few pictures were posted that had been taken by members of the Cycling News Forum.(NONE)

With that in mind - how many stages of the TDF have you seen and what was your favourite / most memorable.

Do you mean live or on TV?

Live: 3 (88, 94, 07)
On TV: 29 (1986-present)

Thanks for the post

I meant in the flesh

And also I was looking for total number of stages (Doubt anyone has seen 100= tdf's!)

I have been watching on TV since 2006 Although I saw the Tour in Paris in 1999 (I think)

Seen 12 stages so far.

Favourite was Chartres ITT IN 2012

I belatedly realised that you meant live, hence the delete (I've restored it now).

Four stages in all (two in 1988 - the finish in Morzine and en route to Alpe d'Huez the next day, 1994 in Portsmouth & 2007 for the Prologue in London. Best was probably Morzine '88 (Fabio Parra won) as I was a teenager back then.

Zero, even if I did I wouldn't take any pictures.

And unless they plan on bringing the Tour over to America I doubt I'll see very many ever. I may go to the WCRR in 2015 though.

Richmond isn't that great an area, but there are some really nice places to be nearby. I live 4-5 hours away.

On topic somewhat, if I did travel to France to see the TdF, I'd be going for a mountain stage! :D

Yeh well Richmond is full of historyn and obviously it wouldnt be a day trip. But looked at Google maps and it doesn't look like a place of amazing beauty. But look where this years Worlds are. You need an air-balloon to get there and it looks like a right hole.

In terms of seeing a mountain stage, unless you wanna spend $5k on a chalet on the Tourmalet you either steal a camper van (cause you cant hire one) or you use your feet.

But I'm sure that many people on this forum have made such a pilgrammage and hope they share their wisdom/experience on this post.

Around 20 (living in Geneva region for some years) - most spectacular probably Andy's Galibier 2011 (perfect weather, 3k from top, you see the whole valley with binocular as they approach), also two recent Alpe finishes (Dutch corner crazy crowd almost impossible to pass when climbing before the race arrives), but also Floyd's testo miracle to Morzine, or Armstrong in yellow catching Simeoni's break and kicking him out (right in the village I lived back then, 2004).

I've seen 2 live, London prologue 2007 and Leeds/Harrogate this year.

Would love to go and see a stage in the mountains of France or even the final Paris stage as I haven't been to Paris for nearly 15 years.

Yeh shame you didnt make it to Jenkin Road

Were you in Harrogate ?

Yes unfortunately we had to change plans (out of my control) so we only did the Harrogate stage this year, we watched the bunch go past by Skipton Road.

Ah well nevermind.

There is no doubt that Prudhomme will be happy to come back to the UK in due course and hopefully now there is broader acceptance that the UK consists of more thsn the dull terrain of the South coast where the population arr hardly excited by the tour anyway. A few days in Wales would be fab IMO.

Oh no you have put me onto another poll :(

You've gotta love a good poll!

I agree a stage in Wales would be great, as you say there's no doubt the Tour will be back in a few years after this years success. In the meantime I will have to get myself over to France to watch a stage.

Yes the poll should start from zero. France is 22 hours on a plane from Australia (even more for Kiwis). Did the OP not know Cycling is followed down here on the other side of the world ?

Naturally my answer is ZERO :(

But I do intend to get over there one of these days :D

8 for me. Favourite was probably the first one because it was my first time abroad on my own and therefore a bit of an adventure. It was in 1992 on Mont Saleve near Geneva on a fairly non-descript stage (the stage before Chiapucci's famous solo trek)

Just the one live, Stage 1 this year.

We were in Reeth, just before the Grindon Moor Cat 4 climb. Saw Jens holding off the pack solo.

My first bike race roadside since the Milk race, about 40 years ago. Went with my wife (her first bike race ever), and my father (who took me to said milk race). He had always wanted to see le Tour, and now in his 70's he has.

Good experience, but I'll probably stick to the TV coverage.

Compared to most here, I have an age and home field advantage. I answered 25-50 before reading 'stages in person' versus 'years following'. I'm not quite at 25, maybe 19 or 20.

I began watching the TdF in '75. I was on the side of the road during the '77 stage between Besancon and Thonon Les Bains, stage very similar to this year's, except that the road went through the Col de la Faucille. It was my greatest cycling memory ever: I saw Eddy . I have been on the side of the road for every stage in the Jura since '77, and for the last two stages of every TdF between '85 and '96, except in '88-'89. For the finish in Paris, I had the creds, so I got free range. Quite nice. Seeing Big Mig make that last right turn on Place de la Concorde to the Champs, on the inside, slowing down to 10 mph and hammering back to 35 mph in about 50 yards was quite impressive.
