I took my mother to the doctor as she was having problems with blood pressure. They prescribed a drug that dilates blood vessels significantly as well as releases existing chemicals in the body that improve oxygen absorbtion. I don't want to mention the drug but it seems to be very effective. I checked the banned list and it is not listed specifically.
Also interesting is that this medicine significantly lowers heart rate. I wondered why Froome could ride away from the worlds best as they were on the rivet while his heart rate tops out @ 165. :D

which doesn't mean it's not an illegal ped.
it might be covered by a more general WADA prohibition.
Here you go:
http://list.wada-ama.org/prohibited-all-times/prohibited-substances/

another question is if it's detectable. Did you ask?

I doubt it has much to do with drugs. Let's ask Michael Rasmussen. He knows.

I've got blood pressure issues, so I'd be really interested to know what this drug is. I'm on two BP drugs at the moment, and I can reach 185 BPM on climbs at the age of 55. What your mum's on sounds just the ticket.

Lol. No, just an ageing UK rider who now struggles to reach a decent level of fitness. If someone tells me the name of this drug I promise not to race (apart from for street signs etc).

Good anti-aging doctor, I thought he was about to be struck off!

:D I believe there is a Wiliers bike for sale in Belgium somewhere with the right kind vroom vroom for the aging rider.. :D

Not sure why OP wont name the drug. It will be a prescription (inc dodgy docs) only or blackmarket for those wishing to dope.

I checked the Willier out, but it's not my size :(

I would be very interested to know what the drug is, if it's legit I'd ask my doctor about it. I'm on two BP drugs, and while they help my BP I don't think they do much for my cycling, messing up potassium levels and stuff.

Cancellara might have a frame or 2 available at the end of the season.

Good luck with the BP.

Yes I think his would fit me.

Thanks, I've cut down on salt and alcohol, and I think due to the latter have lost about 4 kgs, another 4 to go and I'll be happy.

Sorry about not answering as i have been spending alot of time in the hospital the past week and a half.
OK The point of the thread is that there is an existing medication that would seem to be a ped that is not listed on the banned list.
Froome for example has a lower heartrate than most and obviously uses oxygen more efficiently. What a coincidence that this untested drug lowers heart rate while dilating blood vessels and releasing naturally occuring chemicals in the body that improve oxygen absorbtion. ;) ;) ;)
Funny also that someone mentions beetroot in this thread because this beetroot craze might be just be some form of masking agent for this drug.
This drug also spurs production and utilzation of nitric oxide in the body, so i guess the excuse for elevated nitrite levels if caught would be "i just ate a whole case of baby beetroot, Whooops my bad. "

.
To the posters who want to know the drug for real medical reasons. I am sure if you tell your cardiologist that you heard about a relatively new BP drug that exerts nitric oxide and vasodilation they can help you.

Have a nice day.

It looks like Nebivolol might fit the bill, there's a 2009 paper about it here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2697096/

good find, hawkwood.
i'd be surprised if it's not covered by some section of the WADA list.

Be careful!

Taking BP drugs when you have normal or low pressure can kill you.

BP drugs are a favourite among successful suicides - induces sleep, coma and death by heart failure. I've seen the reports.

Stay away - riding a bike faster isn't worth playing with your life.

Thank you, according to the article it's a beta blocker:

`Nebivolol (Bystolic, Forest Laboratories), a third-generation beta blocker, is approved by the FDA for the treatment of hypertension.12 The medication’s unique chemical structure is composed of a racemic mixture of d-nebivolol and l-nebivolol (Figure (Figure11).13 Nebivolol exerts nitric oxide (NO)–mediated vasodilation in addition to conventional beta-blocking effects.'

Its a 3rd gen beta blocker (from a quick google), so banned in specific sports (not cycling) under Section P2.

cheers.
what about section M1 though? particularly :
2. Artificially enhancing the uptake, transport or delivery of oxygen. Including, but not limited to: Perfluorochemicals, efaproxiral (RSR13) and modified haemoglobin products e.g. haemoglobin-based blood substitutes and microencapsulated haemoglobin products, excluding supplemental oxygen.
and maybe also
Any form of intravascular manipulation of the blood or blood components

I don't think it could be said to fall under those, but that would be an argument for lawyers.

Beta blockers generally aren't useful in endurance sports*.
The reduced heart rate isn't a good thing, its more like a speed limiter on a truck or bus. This particular one, maybe the vasodilation compensates ? I just don't know.

*There was some use IIRC in Biathlon events, to bring a steadiness to the shooting portion.

I've got no intention whatsoever of taking anything for my BP other than a drug prescribed by my doctor, just wish I didn't have to take any drugs.
