IG Markets Ranking - It's finally there

I think from what I'm seeing it's a rolling ranking like the old UCI (now CQ) one.

How the Index Works

The IG Markets Pro Cycling Index is designed to reward both moments of brilliance and months of consistent performance.
We source results from over 100 top international road races throughout the season. Races are ranked by our expert panel, based on their prestige and their importance to cycling fans.
The IG Markets Pro Cycling Index has a number of features that make it unique:

• Wins carry much greater weight and are rewarded more than placings.
• Bonus points are awarded for multiple victories in the top races, winning the most prestigious stages at the Grand Tours or outstanding efforts during the Tour de France.
• A Rider of the Day is selected by the panel daily during the Tour de France.
• The Rider of the Month award is an ongoing regular feature.

Second tier races:

E3 Prijs Vlaanderen, Ghent-Wevelgem, Amstel Gold, Flèche Wallone, Clásica San Sebastian, Paris-Tours, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche Eroica, GP Ouest-France, World Championship Time Trial, Olympic Time Trial.

What's Strade Bianche doing there? I like the race, but in prestige and certainly in the field that participates there's no comparison to the Omloop or Amstel Gold.

Another interesting thing is Dan Martin in 14th, ahead of Cadel Evans, to name just one. How is that possible?

I don't think that's an unreasonable rating... would you have scaled the Eneco Tour higher than the ToC? If there's an odd one out, it would be the Vuelta a Burgos IMO. For the same reason as the Strade Bianche: nice race, but not such a strong field. The same could be said about the ToC, but the American teams really go for that one.

Yeah I agree. I would of thought a 2nd place at ATOC and 1st at TOS surely levi should be in the top 20.

Be careful. The CQ ranking has the continual ranking and the ranking for each separate year so be careful when comparing the two.

And CQ isn't just a ranking, it's pretty much a database of all cycling results since they started the site.

They make some really weird choices in this ranking, like the bonus points:

Can riders earn bonuses?
Yes, there are three ways riders can earn bonuses:
By winning multiple stages in a Grand Tour or Stage Race
By being awarded Rider of the Day or Month by our expert panel
By winning certain multiple prestigious races in the same year - for a detailed explanation see full breakdown of the bonuses available here (PDF, 505k)
By winning a queen stage at the Tour de France. For 2011 our expert panel have chosen stages 1, 14, 18 and 21.

To be honest, the first two points seem to have been invented to give Cavendish more points. And I'm not quite sure why stage 1 and 21 are queen stages (well, 21 probably to get Cavendish a little higher in the ranking). I really don't like a ranking that uses an 'expert panel' in the first place. Makes it too subjective. And some of those bonus points seem a bit redundant. If someone wins to GT's in one year, he will get a metric ton of points anyway, why give him more bonus points?

I imagine it's June 24 2010-June 23 2011 or something like that. This ranking tries to reward panache so it's no wonder Levi is penalized compared to a pure results-based ranking like CQ.

I think to say that they would be invented for cav is quite cynical. I don't think he is quite that highly regarded.

Also looking at his results last year from July he would have scored a few IGM points for Tour stages and some for the US TT (not sure if it's included). Not a lot basically.

The British bias would also explain the high rating of Strade Bianche, which seems to be a big race among British fans (bigger than among Northern European fans, for instance).

So does mean stage wins are more highly regarded? Because thinking about it I would expect his win at the dauphine would sneak wiggans in as well. It would certainly make more sense. I personally wouldn't put to much stock in panache or aggression, its certainly more interesting to watch but has doesn't necessarily have anything to do with success or achievements

Can't be. There are some riders in the top-20 who don't speak English, he'd never let that pass.

Maybe the others convinced him they would soon be moving to sky. Scrap that he can't be on the panel there's no lance.

The problem I see with that expert panel thing is, how are they going to rate performances at races that don't have TV coverage? They're going to miss lots if they just go by the reports.
