Il Lombardia 2024, one day monument, October 12, farewell to Domenico Pozzovivo

If that were true, why did he race the WC this year?

For real, these guys are winners, but it's not like they just DNS when they can't win. Rogla actually battles really hard when he gets dropped in Lombardia to still get a result for example.
Agree – plenty of top riders would accept a podium or even sacrificing themselves to help a teammate, but they would never be there just to make up numbers.

Changed the topic to reflect the last of the legend that is Domenico Pozzovivo. Bruised and battered, but he retires on a high.

Domenico Pozzovivo to retire after Il Lombardia: "To continue would be like asking for trouble"

It's easy to forget Pogacar won a monument by a different tacitc than just powering away from everyone 50k from the finish, not too long ago. That was actually a really nice tactical win.
It's pretty obvious he also just was the best rider in the race. Everyone was gassed on the top of Ganda with 30km left to race. G2 syndrome wasn't even that bad and he just held 50s the entire way and didn't really lose time up and down the final hill either.

So the race is almost upon us! There are so many questions.

Will Teddy up the stakes and attack on Valpiana?
Will Remco successfully chase down Pogi? (thanks to marginal gains: additional kilos on descents)
Will Matteo get too close to the sun again?
Will Mas perform a long-range attack on San Fermo Della Battaglia?
Will Fausto finally win his home race? (only to find out that Pogi arrived half an hour earlier)

Also, due to risks of flooding in Como the finish line will be moved from Lungo Lario Trento to viale Felice Cavallotti

Sure, he was the strongest, but it was at a level where a win was never guaranteed. If he had arrived in the valley in a big group it would have been very hard to convince the rest to collaborate on the flat so he could make another attack on the final hill. I'd much rather see that kind of race again than another utterly dominant solo
